Santorum Says Gay Soldiers ‘Cause Problems For People Living In Close Quarters,
At the recent Republican presidential debate where a gay soldier was booed, Rick Santorum expressed his support for reinstating Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell by suggesting there should be “no sexual activity” in the military. On this morning’s Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace challenged Santorum on this response, pointing out that lifting DADT has to do with troops serving openly, not their sexual activity. Wallace also pointed out that the rhetoric Santorum uses is exactly the same as was used in 1941 to oppose racial integration of the military. Nevertheless, Santorum not only doubled down on his opposition to open service for gay troops for the sake of “recruitment and retention,” but stated his beliefs that being gay is a choice, that it’s only defined by sexual behavior, and that “plenty” of people have changed their orientation through ex-gay therapy:

SANTORUM: We’re talking about people who are simply different because of the color of their skin, not because of activities that would cause problems for people living in those close quarters. <...> I know the whole gay community is trying to make this the new civil rights act. It’s not. It’s not the same. You are black by the color of your skin. You are not homosexual, necessarily — obviously, by the color of your skin. <...> The idea that being black and being gay is the same is simply not true. There are all sorts of studies out there that suggest just the contrary, and there are people who were gay and lived the gay lifestyle and aren’t anymore. I don’t think that’s the case with anyone who’s black.

Santorum is wrong on so many counts:

•The extensive Pentagon study found that servicemembers don’t care about serving next to gay soldiers, so unit cohesion would not be impacted.

5. Ever notice that people who say being gay is a choice
seem to have chosen to pretend to themselves to be heterosexual? Like Santorum and Michelle Bachman's husband and that Ted Haggart guy?

9. Marine recruiters reach out at gay pride event in Pasadena
Marine Corps recruiters at the San Gabriel Valley Pride event at Pasadena City College on Saturday didn't care whether the young men who lined up to test their strength were gay or straight.

The Marines just wanted to see some pull-ups done properly: Place hands about shoulder width apart, palms facing away; pull upward until chin is over the bar and then slowly return to the hanging position. Repeat until the feet feel like concrete blocks and the biceps like rubber bands about to snap.

Addison Arce, 23, a slight, sinewy man who ran cross-country at Burbank High School, impressed them with 13 brisk pull-ups. "I've always been fond of the military and what they do," said Arce, who described himself as bisexual. "I've thought about joining. Whether it would be the Marines, the Navy or Coast Guard, I'm not sure." These Marines, he added, "they really know how to put on a show."

With the official repeal last month of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, the Marine Corps, the service that was most opposed to ending the policy, appears to be leading the charge into new recruitment territory.

10. Oh, fachrissake. He should snuggle up to Newt "women get infections in the foxhole" Gingrich.
Move aside, you lazy draft-dodging cretins, there's a new military in town. If you have never served, you don't have the right to comment on QOL issues with any authority whatsoever. He and Newtie are just a couple of armchair generals who couldn't haul themselves out of a foxhole if their lives depended on it.

Putzes.

I was on a team that worked this issue back in the nineties when we were fully expecting a ban lift, as opposed to the DADT compromise. This issue was implementable back then. The only ones who seemed to give a profound shit were the senior leadership--and they get their own quarters/crappers even in the most robustly onerous conditions. Ya gotta wonder why they would even care one way or another?

Gee, if there's "no sexual activity" in the military, that would save on personnel costs ENORMOUSLY!!!! Santorum may be on to something! All of those babies born to military families...pooof!! GONE!! No more military medical facility maternity wards! Everybody, regardless of sexuality, just keep it in your pants, and fight, team, fight!!! Hell, there wouldn't be too many married folk in that case, either--cut way down on PCS and housing costs, too!! What a GREAT way to cut the DOD budget!!! :sarcasm: (in case some didn't get that I'm not serious).
