Five myths about church and state in America

David Sehat, an assistant professor of history at Georgia State University, contributed this article to Saturday's Washington Post. This year, Sehat also published his first book, The Myth of American Religious Freedom, under Oxford University Press. He claims that both liberals and conservatives have generated misconceptions about the link between religion and American politics, including:

1. The Constitution has always protected religious freedom.
2. The founders’ faith matters.
3. Christian conservatives have only recently taken over politics.
4. America is more secular than it used to be.
5. Liberals are anti-religious.
