Baptists promote a line of propaganda that essentially goes like this:

"Oh gee whiz, we know it's bad, but for Baptists, our clergy sex abuse problem is mainly about married ministers who 'have affairs.’ At least we aren't as bad as the Catholics whose problem is about priests having sex with kids."

I’ve seen this basic message over and over again in Baptistland. I’ve seen it from Baptist PR people, Baptist academic people, and Baptist state convention leaders.

You’d think I’d be used to it by now. But when I saw David Gushee spout this same dangerous drivel, I still felt the same dismay.

Gushee’s column began well enough. He talked about how three of the four main factors that have fueled the Catholic scandal are also present in Baptistland: the imbalances of power, the secrecy within the power structure, and the dominance of the sin-forgiveness paradigm.

But then he ended by suggesting that, for Protestant ministers, the problem “more often” involves ministers who “fall prey to heterosexual misconduct, as when married male ministers have affairs….” For Catholics, he said, the problem “more often” is “homosexual or involves the abuse of children.”

This dichotomy is false. It’s the Baptist propaganda.

Nothing stupider than a Catholic who leaves the church for the Baptists or Evangelicals. If you have a weird stigma against sex or sexuality then you are going to get some pervs.

Batshit crazy! I've always wondered about the origin of batshit crazy. Why not dogshit crazy or horseshit crazy. Has it got something to do with bats?

...it has to do with the toxic fumes given off from bat guano. If you are in a cave, in which bats have covered the floor with guano, and you breathe it in for too long, you start to go crazy.

This explanation is unconfirmed, though it makes sense.

2. Both religious hierarchies

Both religious hierarchies wish to subjugate women and despise gay people. I see no value in either. The Catholics give some lip service to the poor once in a while but a lot of Baptists would just as soon run over them with their SUVs.

6. Through the years, I've seen plenty of reports of "Jesus" camps

abusing children...just a couple years ago I seem to remember a group in Ill. or Mich. of "Baptists" being raided for a child porn ring...so they can keep fooling themselves if they want, but it's not the truth...

7. Black Collar Crimes

I used to subscribe to Freethought Today, published by the Freedom From Religion Foundation. The two inside pages in the back, was a section called Black Collar Crimes. Every month they were filled with crimes committed (usually sexual)by ministers of every denomination. A lot of fundie Baptists in there.

they've been on the wrong side of history since I can remember. White southern baptists? I bet you saw many of them spitting on black people during integration.

they are the leaders of stupid in trying to dumb down education in the U.S. They are either incapable of understanding the difference between a belief and a fact.
