White House Stands Behind Geithner, Says Tim Was Not Involved In AIG Email Fiasco
It appears Geithner will not be fired after all (for now). From Bloomberg:

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner “was not involved” in decisions by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York when it told American International Group Inc. to withhold details from the public about the bailed-out insurer’s payments to banks in 2008, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said.

Geithner, who was head of the New York Fed at the time, “wasn’t party to the decision,” Gibbs said at a White House briefing. Asked if President Barack Obama continues to have confidence in Geithner, Gibbs said, “Of course.”

If the head of the Fed was not involved in the biggest bailout ever, what was he doing? Playing tiddlywinks?

1. Are they saying he was not aware of the situation?
Makes one wonder how on top of things he was

7. They are saying he had nothing to do with the emails, you know the ones in his own handwriting

Perhaps he was writing on the emails in his sleep or something.

Or do you mean to or from his own email account?

won't have a leg to stand on. The mood of the country makes hating geithner almost required. what would it take for them to dump this a-hole? Murder charges?

23. It's starting to seem like "Bush World." No one ever fired or resigned...they just check in and
never leave. Meanwhile America suffers without anyone held accountable for any REAL CRIMES for well over a decade now. It's surreal.... Welcome to the Hotel California......Government in the NEW AMERICA!

2. Well, how about his OWN handwriting? Is THAT involvement?

The smoking gun in the AIG – Geithner cover up

In then New York Fed president Tim Geithner’s own handwriting:

Note that there should be no discussion or suggestion that AIG and the NY Fed are asking to structure anything else at this point.

It will be enlightening to hear him explain what this statement means. See also Tim Geithner "Protects America From Itself" By Forcing Elimination Of Material AIG Disclosure at Zero Hedge. There are many more documents to come. This story is just unfolding.

16. The page you linked to asserts that it's Geithner's handwriting
but I couldn't find anything to support that assertion. Could you please provide a link to a source that demonstrates the handwriting on the e-mail to be that of Geithner? Thanks.

Just a big paycheck.

Why, yes, that was sarcasm.

11. Even if they cut him loose, who's to say they won't just appoint another corporatist suck up?
There are a lot more Goldman Sachs ass kissers in Washington for Rahm and Obama to appoint I am sure. They seem eager to fatten Wall Street wallets at as quick a pace or faster than Bush even did.

14. True, but Geithner has already gotten caught breaking the law once before

by having a huge tax bill which he wouldn't pay. Obama stood behind him then.

That was Geithner's mulligan.

By continuing standing behind a man who breaks the law by deliberately lying to the SEC and Congress and the American public, the only person hurt is Obama.

And yes, the next person Obama puts in will be just another stinker. That's a given.

17. "I'm not a regulator."
That statement alone when he went through the confirmation process should have been enough to deny him the post of Treasury Secretary. It should also be ample justification to can him.

27. what's disturbing about this is that GOP pols took the lead in bringing it forward
obviously, they only saw it as a way to make political hay and are probably jealous they weren't in a position to carry Wall Street water themselves.

That doesn't excuse Geithner or Obama apologizing for him, it's just an additional factor.
