The Sad Little Parade
The Sad Little Parade
By David Glenn Cox

(Warning, this article contains quotes taken verbatim from mainstream websites. I can only imagine what is being said on partisan sites.)

So, yesterday I was looking for writing jobs when I see this advertisement: "Looking for Freelance writers to write for a website edited by Tucker Carlson." The name of Tucker Carlson was dropped in to give the ad credibility, but for me it did just the opposite. Carlson is best known for a bow tie and a weak mind; he is the Tim McCarver of rightwing punditry.

I last saw the Tuckster on a panel discussion carried by C-SPAN, and what caught my attention as he sat on the stage with his legs crossed was that he wasn’t wearing any socks. Maybe that’s Hollywood chic, but this was a Washington panel discussion. If you're not certain, wear socks just to be on the safe side. Even if it wasn’t Tucker Carlson, it's hard to take a man seriously in dress slacks and no socks.

Carlson first announced this website back in May and said that it would be up in a few days. May has turned into November and they are just getting around to looking for writers? The site is named “The Daily Caller” and is designed to be a right wing version of the Huffington Post. The right has discovered that they are being lambasted in the area of Internet readership. Perhaps it is because their faithful are glued to Fox News, or perhaps it is that their faithful don’t read too much or too often.

Carlson had told the audience at the Heritage Foundation, “There just aren’t enough people covering this administration and telling the people what’s going on.” Swing and a miss! Most of us with a long past have rightly or wrongly been let go from a job; Carlson has been let go from every job. CNN, MSNBC, and now he’s landed at Fox where the emphasis in not on how well you do your job but how well you do as you’re told.

He is a sad sack, a crummy moronic type that is hard to take seriously, but when you want to build a conservative website there is always money available. Reports show that they have raised $1.5 million, and that should be more than enough money to get a web site off the ground. But the more I began to ponder Tucker’s problem of getting this website going, the more I began to understand the Daily Caller's dilemma.

When your party is led by those who scream for attention and where each pundit must be further and further out in right field than the last, where do you find new writers? There was a time that I would read the Wall Street Journal because they had interesting and well-written articles. I understood going in that they would have a conservative bias but they could still be entertaining and worth reading. Today, sadly, Murdoch has worked his magic and the Wall Street Journal is not much more than a print and online version of Fox News.

Many of the conservative bloggers themselves are such parrots of talking points that no matter what the subject matter, it begins to sound like feeding time at the aviary. The Wall Street Journal published the following story:

Suicide Toll Fuels Worry That Army Is Strained

The conservative blogosphere answered:

“Throw money at it and do another mental health study. This secular humanist mentality does little to relieve the root cause of hopelessness in the face of mortality that plagues the Army and our society. Real abiding religious faith in God is the source of hope in the face of mortality. Our society - led by our President - drains the culture of traditional religious faith every day with its progressive ideas most of which exclude the God of traditional religious faith.”

This was followed by:

“And lets not forget that our inexperienced Commander-in-Chief, Obama, has granted Miranda rights to captured terror suspects. Imagine the sense of hopelessness this instills in our military as they put their lives on the line day in and day out.”

I wrote an article titled “For What It’s Worth” and in it I complained about how conservative the Obama administration actually is. I asked the readers to think about the fact that Donald Rumsfeld's successor is serving in the Obama cabinet and a conservative opined, “I've thought about it for more than a second, and I conclude that he's a pearl among the socialist swine."

Socialist swine, 1,300 words and the conservative answers socialist swine. Carlson is faced with writing a news website in a non-fact-based environment. How can Carlson develop a conservative news site when its followers only have the same three answers no matter what the question?

Too much Government!

Not enough God!

Too much Obama!

If Obama parted the Red Sea the conservatives would pounce, "That’s just Obama showing off his giant ego again! Why couldn’t he have stayed home and parted the Potomac?"

Carlson faces a polarized, politicized environment where the Republicans eat their young if they’re not extreme enough. On The Daily Beast website, Meghan McCain was trying to defend Joe Lieberman’s stand against the public option. Sounds like something a good Republican would do, doesn’t it? Well, here's a few replies:

“She must love Hitler and the au courant, MAO, too.”

“Seems like you wrote this before! or everything you write sounds alike or something, same thing, different day! go pose for playboy, you know you want to!”

I was reading a poll that asked a rather simple question: Will John Corzine win reelection in New Jersey?

“But in reality, it is the Conservative movement that is trying to sweep the elections. Forget the Party label. From now on, Americans want to save this nation, regardless of party label, and going for conservative principles; i.e., limited government, the free market system, lower taxes, non-appeasement of our enemies, strong national defense, freedoms that are being lost through the Obama Administration, retention of strong family values, stopping of the runaway spending, tight immigration laws and tight border controls, and religious freedom lost through years of government meddling. It is 1776 all over again and move out of the way Left Wingers or get trampled under. We, the American people, are mad as hell and we are not going to take this communism crap anymore. God Bless America as we always knew it, and we pray for Your Divine Guidance and intervention to save our country from the enemies from without, and from within.”

“But it may not be so until after they count the fraudulent votes put in place by the dem party "cheat division" of SEIU, ACORN, and the Working Family Party.”

“If i didn't know that most of the elections will be stolen by ACORN I would vote yes. We will never have legtimate elections in the USA again. The Kenya born Muslim, Marxist, Moron occupying the White House will soon anoint himself as caliph of this nation and remain where he is until he has departed to join Allah.”

These people’s beliefs are absolutely Stalinist. You may be loyal, comrade, but are you loyal enough? Carlson will have a tough row to hoe with this fanatical lynch-mob mentality, because to even dabble in fact-based journalism is to invite the torches and pitch fork parade. But before we count him out we should remember what Jon Stewart said of Carlson, "You know what's interesting though? You're as big a dick on your show as you are on any show."

In conservative circles that is akin to being a Fulbright scholar, but is being a dick going to be enough for this sad little man leading a sad little parade to get anyone to follow? Only time will tell.

4. socialist: one who promotes human society
Without a strong and participatory government of the people, we wouldn't have the internet, religious freedom, interstate commerce, rights, currency, or even a country--let alone a Democratic one.

The strength of the people's democracy our progenitors established is the last protection we now have against the tyranny of concentrated capital in the hands of powerful and extremely wealthy special interests, which also happen to control the media of public discourse.

More government of, by, and for the people is America's only hope for progress.

Get publicly financed elections!

5. Tucker Carlson...
...this guy is one of those silver-spoon types. We wouldn't know who he is if not for his father's influence. I used to watch his MSNBC show just to see Rachel Maddow, who was a regular for a while. But I just couldn't take it. Tucker's whining and condescension became tiresome and irritating. Of course, his politics are reprehensible. I'd like to take his pasty heinie on a five-day hike in rough country to see how soon his whining would turn to outright weeping. His pose as a rugged individualist and self-made man would evaporate. He's soft and vacuous. His ultimate exposure was on "Dancing with the Stars," wherein he was revealed to be as good a dancer as he is a he-man.
