Wingnuts Rewriting the Bible to Make it Less "Liberal" LOL
Let's get this out of the way right off the bat: no, this is not satire. It's absolutely true.

The good folks at Conservapedia ("The Trustworthy Encyclopedia") have embarked on The Conservative Bible Project to remove all traces of "liberal bias" from the Good Book.

More, if you can stand it...

MeMeMeMeMe's diary :: :: Since the facts have a well-known liberal bias, a bunch of wingnuts decided in 2006 to create an alternative to Wikipedia, a liberal cesspool of fact-checking, sources and citations. They called their new venture Conservapedia, whose chief mission was "to educate advanced, college-bound homeschoolers". No longer would young, impressionable minds be corrupted by empirical evidence and so-called "facts". With that mission apparently accomplished, they have now turned their attention toward the Bible.

Declaring that "Liberal bias has become the single biggest distortion in modern Bible translations", they have embarked on an ambitious project to strip all Christian principles from the Christian Bible.

Step 1--get rid of Luke 23:34:<7>:

Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

This quotation is a favorite of liberals but should not appear in a conservative Bible.

Jesus is talking about the Christian principle of forgiveness? Cut His mic! Cut His Mic!

Step 2--Reaffirm the well-known fact that Jesus was a capitalist:

Socialistic terminology permeates English translations of the Bible, without justification. This improperly encourages the "social justice" movement among Christians.

Yes, because if there's one thing that made Jesus puke, it was social justice!

There's lots more that's appallingly stupid, but I think I'll just present their entire set of guidelines for your enjoyment (btw, #3 is my favorite):

1. Framework against Liberal Bias: providing a strong framework that enables a thought-for-thought translation without corruption by liberal bias
2. Not Emasculated: avoiding unisex, "gender inclusive" language, and other modern emasculation of Christianity
3. Not Dumbed Down: not dumbing down the reading level, or diluting the intellectual force and logic of Christianity; the NIV is written at only the 7th grade level<3>
4. Utilize Powerful Conservative Terms: using powerful new conservative terms as they develop;<4> defective translations use the word "comrade" three times as often as "volunteer"; similarly, updating words which have a change in meaning, such as "word", "peace", and "miracle".

1. "2. Not Emasculated: avoiding unisex, 'gender inclusive' language, and other modern emasculation..."
Just to underscore the fact that they consider women to be a subservient class of quasi-people.

Why don't we leave Biblical translations to the language experts and but the fuck out? Ri-i-ight, because that will not make people slaves fast enough.

3. Well, they all have miniscule dicks, so
ANY more perceived threats would make them disappear altogether.

maybe they will take out all references to women as a backdoor way of coming out of the closet.

10. Well, I don't think they are necessarily gay, though some probably are.
I think it is more likely that they recognize the strong-father-figure family model as the best model for government for the ruling class.

12. They'll Have to Take Jesus Out, As Well
so what's left? Old Testament, 10 plagues, Sodom and Gommorah, the kind of stuff the "Conservatives" get off on anyway.

2. waitaminnit!
didn't God write the Bible? So, they want to tamper with His Holy Word?

unless the Big Feller Upstairs has gotten much more conservative over the past 20 Centuries

and felt it's time for a new edition

with forward by Ann Coulter, perhaps

4. Then maybe they should get the original language books, I am
sure the Vatican has plenty of copies of those, find some people who can read and understand the languages that they are written in. Mostly Greek I think. After getting all that together then do are corrected translation from the original. If they take one of the already existing translations, they are just translating a translation, with all of the mistakes and inaccuracies that those translations have.

Also the Dead Sea Scrolls that have been found since need to be considered also.

That should keep them busy for a few years. Since I think that they may have a bit of trouble finding the people with the skills necessary to do a new translations. Have to take what those words meant then and what they mean now. I am not convinced that these fundies have the persons who are qualified to do this type of work. If they do, it is not going to be an easy or quick job.

Nor is it going to be a cheap job.

7. Nah. They're working from the KJV to do this.
You can see some of the work in process at a link on the Jerkopedia site. It's an interesting process.

15. If they got real scholars to do it from the original there would be a big problem for them . . .
the Bible and other religious documents DO have a liberal viewpoint. Anybody who did from the original would have to report back to them that Jesus really was a liberal.

6. They've already done part of John, and it's pretty
funny to read. You can find the link to it on the Jerkopedia site. The translation, or rewriting has some really obvious stuff in it. They're trying not to recognize countries in the region by replacing the word country with other things that seem to imply that it's all one big Jewish homeland. That's their way of dealing with Palestine and the rest of the area.

Much of it is just modernizing the KJV language, but there are subtle little changes that actually change the meanings of several verses.

It's interesting to read, and the KJV text is alongside the "new" interpretation, so you can see exactly what's going on in their tiny little minds.

9. My "favorite" is their replacing the word "Pharisee" with "intellectual."
Turning "300 denarii" into "three dollars" is a close second. If Augustan legionaries only got $2.25 a year, no wonder they kept killing their bosses...

they will still have to find someone to read it to Palin.
Who the hell granted her a college degree, anyway?

in Mark 10:21-10:25. All that eye of the needle stuff, and giving your stuff to the poor stuff. So far, nobody's taken it on.

18. They already did that once - the New International Version
Where there's any question of translation, the NIV always takes the authoritarian approach.

The NRSV is a much better translation.

21. exactly
the NIV was translated in such a way as to promote ideology, and the translation team made no bones about it.

and yes, the NSRV is likely the best english translation around as it was translated for accuracy to idioms and language at the time of writing.

Mostly, fundies and wingnuts are Paullians, not Christians.
