Look out Dems: Young Repubs wait on marching orders
Look out Dems: Young Repubs wait on marching orders
By Joseph Pea, SDNN
After Democrats thumped Republicans at the ballot box in November, the San Diego Young Republicans membership doubled.

Local Republican Party leaders may know something the national party hasnt caught on to; that there is a wealth of knowledge and energy in the partys youth base, and despite being outnumbered young Republicans rival the enthusiasm of young Democrats.

But with Democrats holding an up to 18 percent advantage among voters under age 25, according to a recent Gallup poll, the GOP faces a daunting task here and at the state and national levels to mobilize its youth base in 2010 and 2012 as effectively as the Democrats have used social networking sites, and text-message alerts to engage young voters.

Compounding the challenge to drum up youth support, the Republican Party may be facing a branding issue: Gallup reported 38 percent of Republicans have an unfavorable view of their own party (compared to 7 percent of Democrats who have an unfavorable view of the Democratic Party).

The good news for Republicans, though, is Gallup also reported 46 percent of Americans think the Democratic Party has become too liberal, and despite voter ID numbers that would indicate otherwise, 40 percent of Americans consider themselves conservative (significantly higher than the 18 percent who consider themselves liberal)... 2. Rheta Grimsley Johnson wrote it best
They used to be called Ku Klux Klansmen today they are known as Young Republicans.

I chuckle when I hear right wing knuckleheads toss about the 40% and 18% stats. I have no reason to dispute the poll but I also do not dispute the serious ass whipping the "conservatives" took in the 2008 elections.

5. Of course you have to keep in mind...
The democrats are looking at under 25. Remember the head of young republicans until the racist postings on their blog shut them down was 38.

7. If young Republicans are to remain truly Republican they must become still more gullible with age.
That part of the equation was left out.
