THE first time George Bush and Tony Blair met we were assured this was a marriage of true minds, illustrated by the astounding fact they used the same toothpaste. Big smiles were produced to prove it. How times have changed.
Tony Blair has always insisted Britain must keep onside with America so he can influence his opposite number in the White House. The only way to have your shout heard is to be the honest broker in search of solutions, not problems. That policy is decidedly thin now, as the smiles at this week's Washington summit will be.
George Bush will listen, praise his steadfast ally and Blair's statesmanship and courage. Then do exactly what he wants.
The United States is currently digging itself deeper and deeper into the quicksands of Iraq and there is nothing we can do about it. Bush, Rumsfeld and the army war machine know only one way, the old Vietnam way. If you have them by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow.
