Self-described "moderate", but a borderline fascist when he goes off on what he imagines the "left" to be (not so much lately, tho'). Paradoxically, quite a good writer and often dead on when it comes to some international events, Iraq & Afghanistan for instance.

5. I love Eric Margolis
He is a breath of fresh air in my local newspaper which along with the Canadian Sun newspaper (the New York Post(s) of Canada) tend to pepper their editorials with neoconnish or fundamental fools. Eric tirelessly pounds common sense and truth into readers about Middle East affairs. However, too many people (even here in Canada) have fallen for the neocon bullcrap. Let me give you an example:

A letter to the editor complaining about Eric Margolis

Margolis marching with two left feet

Regarding Eric Margolis' column, Picking Iraq's corpse (Dec. 14).

First, the awarding of the primary contracts (for the reconstruction) to those who supported the Iraq invasion was the right one when one considers that the soldiers who lost their lives were mainly Americans.

In addition, the $18.5 billion comes directly from the pockets of the American taxpayers. Notwithstanding the fact that France and Germany did not want to participate in the war (a legimate option), these large and wealthy countries could have made some contribution in rebuilding Iraq. For these reasons, any other decision made by the Bush administration would have raised the roof sky-high and made the American people furious.

Secondly, the notion that the U.S. went to war against Iraq is pure rubbish. If America wanted oil, it could have invaded, say, Venezuela or, after the Gulf War, could have occupied Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Besides, the world is awash with oil. No shortages.

It is interesting to note that Margolis' column was written in Paris, the home of most of the far-left newspapers in Europe.

A. R. Pettigrew

I decided to write a letter to the editor to refute this utterly idiotic letter.

A.G. Pettigrew’s letter regarding Eric Margolis’ column about Picking Iraq’s Corpse has a number of fallacies that need to be addressed.

The suggestion that USA did not go to war for oil is not true. While oil might not been the only reason, it is reasonable to believe that oil is a significant factor. Please recall the words of superhawk Paul Wolfowitz, US deputy defence secretary, who claimed that one major reason was that Iraq is “swimming in oil”.

As for USA not invading Velenzuela, check out the reports discussing the allegations that America was covertly involved in the attempted coup against Hugo Chavez in Venezuela.

So there is no shortage of oil since the world is “awash with oil”? I suppose Pettigrew has not heard the reports on “peak oil”. No, this is not a doomsday cry from paranoid environmentalists. A group of scientists (as reported in sites such as CNN) has indicated that oil production levels will peak very soon after 2010.

The insinuation that Margolis is part of the far left-leaning press because he writes from Paris is laughable. He is a conservative himself and his reports are highly featured in conservative and liberitarian sites.
