More S. Dakotans working two jobs: Highest rate in U.S. forced by low wages
Robert Wilson • For the Argus Leader

One in 10 South Dakota workers had more than one job in 2007 - the highest rate in the nation, according to a recent study by the University of North Dakota.

The study's statistics suggest the trend is on the rise, as low wages and seasonal employment lead a growing number of people to add second or even third jobs to meet living costs. And the statistic leaves some wondering how South Dakotans will fare as local unemployment rates rise in the face of an ongoing national recession.

According to U.S. Department of Labor statistics compiled by the University of North Dakota, 10.2 percent of South Dakotans had more than one job in 2007, the most recent year statistics are available. The rate for South Dakota has increased every year since 2003. That year, 8.6 percent of the state's workers had two or more jobs.
