Russian analyst predicts decline and breakup of U.S.
Edited on Sat Nov-29-08 02:56 PM by MATTMAN
MOSCOW, November 24 (RIA Novosti) - A leading Russian political analyst has said the economic turmoil in the United States has confirmed his long-held view that the country is heading for collapse, and will divide into separate parts.

Professor Igor Panarin said in an interview with the respected daily Izvestia published on Monday: "The dollar is not secured by anything. The country's foreign debt has grown like an avalanche, even though in the early 1980s there was no debt. By 1998, when I first made my prediction, it had exceeded $2 trillion. Now it is more than 11 trillion. This is a pyramid that can only collapse."

The paper said Panarin's dire predictions for the U.S. economy, initially made at an international conference in Australia 10 years ago at a time when the economy appeared strong, have been given more credence by this year's events.

When asked when the U.S. economy would collapse, Panarin said: "It is already collapsing. Due to the financial crisis, three of the largest and oldest five banks on Wall Street have already ceased to exist, and two are barely surviving. Their losses are the biggest in history. Now what we will see is a change in the regulatory system on a global financial scale: America will no longer be the world's financial regulator."

When asked who would replace the U.S. in regulating world markets, he said: "Two countries could assume this role: China, with its vast reserves, and Russia, which could play the role of a regulator in Eurasia."

Asked why he expected the U.S. to break up into separate parts, he said: "A whole range of reasons. Firstly, the financial problems in the U.S. will get worse. Millions of citizens there have lost their savings. Prices and unemployment are on the rise. General Motors and Ford are on the verge of collapse, and this means that whole cities will be left without work. Governors are already insistently demanding money from the federal center. Dissatisfaction is growing, and at the moment it is only being held back by the elections and the hope that Obama can work miracles. But by spring, it will be clear that there are no miracles."

4. Sounds like some ramped up nationalism to me
Russia is already collapsing due to oil price drops and selling their gold reserves to raise liquidity. The country only accounts for 3% of the total GDP of the world. The areas where Russia can be a player is commodities and resources. We already have seen the commodities market drop off a cliff and resources have yet to jump in price since the crisis. The Central Bank has had to dole out hundreds of billions just to shore up the ruble. Russia is in the same boat as most industrialized nations, probably a bit better of a position due to their low amount of public debt and their past budget surpluses. In the end, however, they are in a more precarious situation due to having 80% of their exports come from commodities, and because of this they are more susceptible to the market swings

5. It's an entertaining read.
But be skeptical. It just so happens this analyst authored a book on psychological warfare.

I enjoyed the part about Russia taking Alaska back though. Maybe Palin can fight them off along with Todd's snowmachine army . . . wait a minute I smell a movie plot.

7. Don't be too quick to dismiss
Russia.

For one thing, they are sitting on I believe $465 billion in cold hard cash. When I say "cold" I mean cold such as hard currency.
Let's see if Washington can match that.

Now for sure, they are dependent on oil sales (and also natural gas). As the rest of the world starts to collapse, they will too. But maybe not as much.

I really believe the upcoming meltdown is going to be on an individual basis. The countries which have the "toughest" people will survive. This does not necessarily mean "the most pampered" or the "most priveleged" people.

19. In 2006,....
Edited on Sun Nov-30-08 12:55 PM by bvar22

In 2006, we seceded from Corpotocristan.
We are no longer good corporate citizens.
We QUIT!

We will no longer pay for the obscenity this country has become.
We have reduced our taxable income to near poverty levels.
We no longer use "credit", don't have a mortgage, build everything ourselves, buy "used, 2nd hand, or salvage" directly from previous owners, and Barter, Trade, or pay CASH to avoid all taxes whenever possible. We are currently growing about 1/2 our food, and plan to increase that percentage this year.
As much as possible, we have stopped consuming in the Corporate America sense of the word.

We realize we are very fortunate to be in a situation to do this. We have no dependent children, and are in good health. We miss the advantages of Urban Consumption, but have little desire to return.
We pray that an Obama administration and a Democratic Congress can turn things around for America, but see no signs that this will happen.

30. Sending them elsewhare could work.
Igor Panarin I think is some kind of tinfoil rightist, but he is right that we are in a world of hurt. Just no end to the US and no break up. We may need to slap some ideological descendants of the klu kluxers around but that's about it.

As for the holly followers, create the federally administered territory of South Carolina.
Excempt them from all US laws except:
  • Environmental protection rules.
  • Freedom to leave.
  • limited anti-discrimination (limit it to immutable characteristics of the individual)

Require:
  • That everyone who wants to leave may sell their real property and business in a arms-length transaction.
  • Equal protection under the law.
  • Require in lieu of military service and all federal taxes, pay a per capita tax to support federal functions.
  • Them to cary a passport in the rest of the US.

Let them have a reservation to run into the ground. Every last fundie christian will move there and away from us. South Carolina was selected because it was their idea to begin with and its the most fundie state to start. We could instead give them a piece of North Dakota.

What do you think?

26. IIRC the rightwing was pushing such a break-up in 1999 or 2000, on the
theory that the US was "too big to govern." Of course, like the current R scheme of bankrupting the Federal government, a split primarily serves corporate interests, by eliminating the possibility of any meaningful regulation: the new countries they hoped to form would be small and weak
