A Statesman and a Sock Puppet

Pageantry in politicsThere’s a lot that can be said of our supposed “debates” today, which essentially are free air-time for candidates to spout off rehearsed talking points. Not a single politician today could match wits with a Cicero or Demosthenes.

But working with what we have, it was clear after the only vice-presidential debate we’re getting that Joe Biden possesses substance, knowledge and experience… while Sarah Palin got to wink and say “Darnit” while she rattled off prepackaged sound-bytes. Even when they weren’t appropriate. Even when they didn’t answer the question.

Just seconds after the debate’s closing, pundits were already spinning why Biden won, or why Palin won. Biden demonstrated a depth of insight about an array of topics. He showcased knowledge of the Constitution. He addressed real issues, both foreign and domestic and always practical. And he can do it on the fly, because he knows what he's talking about.

How is Palin on the fly? A potential leader of the nation, may we be reminded every day.

And this isn’t cherry-picking. I wish it was.
