UK trade union concerned over influx of Indian IT workers
Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 08:40

Concerns over outsourcing jobs to India are commonplace. But now, Britain's largest trade union is concerned over the influx of Indian IT workers to the UK.

Barely a week after Lloyds TSB raised its voice against outsourcing, Indian IT companies, which have operations in the UK are facing a salvo of a different kind: Keep expatriates away!

Six Indian IT companies including Wipro, TCS and Infosys, brought 11,000 Indians to UK in 2006 alone. And Britain's largest trade union, Unite, is concerned that this large influx of Indian IT workers may cost resident workers their jobs, and undercut British salaries.

Peter Skyte, Unite Union said, “There has to be a balance between the demands of the IT industry and the local British workers. We recognise the need of IT firms to bring in skills but we are concerned that the balance might be skewed.”
