Cross-border thoughts on Iraq

Of the nearly 1,700 written responses to my columns last year, about 600 were critical. Many were thoughtful, others not. A selection of the latter in the Sunday column itself prompted 140 responses, 19 of whom wondered whether all my critics were similarly vituperative. Of course not, even though debates do seem sadly polarized these days. The Sunday sample gave a glimpse into what seems to be a new strain of anger.
Overall, the sharpest differences were over the war on Iraq, from Canadians and Americans.

The feedback provides a valuable insight into public thinking on both sides of the border at a critical moment in our bilateral relations. Herewith the sample, starting with the favourable.

"It's liberating to see the truth stated without the inhibition we see in our (American) media."

"Why can't we get journalistic coverage of these issues (in America)? Thank you for your views. I couldn't agree more — or be more terrified!"
