Hope for two billion audience

ORGANISERS of global Live Earth concerts in nine major cities - including Sydney - are hoping two billion people will tune in today to watch megarock stars press home the dangers of global warming.

Although staging such a planetary event has not been without headaches, such pop giants as Madonna and Police, backed by US politician-turned-campaigner Al Gore, hope to succeed where years of scientific warnings have failed. Gore will be urging the global audience to lobby industry and governments to take action to save the planet from climate change.

The Live Earth festivities today in Sydney, with a wave of music set to ripple around the globe taking in Tokyo, Shanghai, Hamburg, London, Johannesburg and New York and wrapping up in Rio de Janeiro.

A ninth concert was added at the last minute in Washington, and there will also be a symbolic rendezvous in Kyoto, Japan, and at a base in Antarctica featuring Nunatak, the British Antarctic Survey's (BAS) indie-rock house band.
