Isn't it about time the left took the flag back?
A very good letter to the editor published in the July 4 issue of the Tacoma News Tribune.

Fly the flag and hope for which it stands
CHARLA SKAGGS; Tacoma;

Re: "Flag is not a Republican bumper sticker" (Open Mike, 6-30).

I, too, have grown increasingly frustrated with the perception that our flag represents only those who support the policies of this administration. Even more, I am fearful of the sentiments driving that perception: that dissent is disloyal, protest is pro-terrorist and inquiry is inquisition.

1. Bill Moyers
wrote a fantastic piece about the hijacking of the flag by the Right. It was published in Rolling Stone and Buzzflash.com featured it as well. I'll look for a link! It was tremendous!

2. Absolutely. More liberals and progressives have died for the
flag than conservatives. The only reason the conservative repugs have the high ground now is because the working masses have been completely turned off by politics.

My image below conveys my feelings because a committed Democrat is the true protector of our flag, country and democracy. Like a pit bull, we need that type committment to continue the never ending fight against those hell-bent to establish a corporate state. The fight is not for just one election -- it's forever!

AND DAMM PROUD OF IT!

3. The flag stands for freedom!
We should not surrender the symbol of our freedom for them to use as a fascist rally-banner.

4. And the eagle..
As soon as I see an eagle on a website, I know I'm in enemy territory. The damn Repukes politicise everything the American people revere, the flag, the eagle, even God!

6. 100% correct
I agree with this.

I find myself discouraged occasionally by those on our side who disdain patriotic symbols or ideals. IT's easy enough to do; Republicans have seized on all those symbols as signs of Conservatives, and I've read many columns that suggested that an increase in patriotism is an increase in Conservativism. Of coures we all know that is nonsense. But sometimes nonsense has a way of being made to seem plausible.

7. At this stage, I'm not sure I'd want such a tattered, shopworn item.
It's been used, abused and misused. Overexposed. Shanghai'ed into the service of the most reprehensible, un-American concepts. It'll need a major overhaul before I'd want it back.

10. Every SUV needs a flag.
Before it was right wing the flag was a shill for business.

8. Agreed
Which is why I had two American flags attached to my signs at each and every peace march I attended. It's OUR flag more than the fascist right's flag because we understand the true meaning. They use it as a convenient catch-all for their lockstep thinking. They are guilty of desecrating our flag.

9. Those wacky Republicans
If they're not spouting sexism and anti-homosexuality while hiding behind the Bible, they're pushing for a new imperialism while hiding behind the flag. Maybe they're not as wacky as they are... well, detestable.
