Proving they're Americans
Thousands of Virginia children were punished because Washington wanted to purge
phantom illegal aliens from Medicaid rolls.

Nine months after the federal government began requiring that state Medicaid recipients prove they are
U.S. citizens, the numbers are in: Six out of 10 eligible Virginia children wait weeks or months for care
because of the burdensome requirements.

The change in the law was meant to keep illegal immigrants from taking advantage of the benevolence of
American taxpayers. Instead, it has kept the very people Medicaid is supposed to help from seeing
doctors.

Of course, this was expected at the outset. Studies of Medicaid programs found that very few illegal
immigrants were mistakenly or fraudulently on the rolls. Still the xenophobes pushed for a requirement
that all Medicaid recipients show up at a state office with passport in hand.

Second, poorer Virginians, not exactly globetrotters, aren't likely to spend nearly $100 on a passport. The
government in its foresight decided then to allow certified copies of birth certificates with another piece of
identification. But again, this proves difficult for families caring for foster children or relatives' children or
even their own for whom they thought the record from the hospital would suffice.

In the end Virginia is now signing up less CHILDREN for Medicaid than before the Federal Law and children was waiting for paperwork showing they are Americans and can not get medical help until the paperwork is done.

My therapist told me that she thought pretty soon they will demand patients be chipped to get benefits like SSI or medicaid.I agreed with her.We talked awhile..
