Impeachment a Transcendent Act

by Bruce Toien

One of our most courageous advocates for democracy, Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), last week declared on the House floor that "impeachment may well be the only remedy which remains to stop a war of aggression against Iran."

He is right. We -- and the world -- cannot wait. It is time to impeach the top members of this Administration *NOW*. For a while I was swayed by the arguments of the pragmatists that Oversight and Investigation are too important to be compromised by pursuing uncertain impeachment proceedings. But I've come back to the position that America can actually walk and chew gum at the same time.

Why the hurry? Well here's why. It's not us, it's this Administration that is in an hurry -- in a hurry to take us into a new war with Iran, in a hurry to plunder our resources both natural and human, in a hurry to finish sacking our Treasury, in a hurry to administer the coup de grace upon the remnants of our American democracy, in a hurry to send more brave Americans to their deaths. To paraphrase Martin Luther King, "We cannot wait".

Impeachment is not about retribution, much as many of us would savor it. It's about the rule of law. The Bush Administration has been accused of many heinous acts. I think it's only fair that they finally get their "day in court" to answer the charges and face their accusers.

In particular, there are two primary reasons for introducing Articles of Impeachment right away:

1) To stop ongoing large-scale criminal behavior as quickly as possible
2) To demonstrate to the world and to ourselves that we are still a good and just nation of laws, not of men -- that we are an asset, not a danger, to the world community, that nations need not arm themselves against us

And what a magnificent legacy we could leave, to do what no great power in history has ever done: Regulate our own power, even in the absence of external constraints.

That's why impeachment of the Bush Administration at this time would be a transcendent act.

1. Perfectly stated.
1. We need to show the world we are not THEM.
2. We need to stop their looting
3. We cannot wait

Thanks, Babylonsister, for another great read. :hi:

The Constitution -- amended and entrusted to us to protect and perfect as we strive to "form a more perfect union" -- defines who we are. It embodies our hopes for what a True America can be. It is the product of our commitment to the audacious belief that common people can design and perfect a system -- the inviolate dictates, framework, officials, powers, evolving institutions and body of law -- that balances conflicting interests in a way that reflects common values and embodies the principle of consent.

Nancy "off the table" Pelosi and Harry "we'll get Cheney" Reid have created a national crisis graver than any natural disaster or social ill. It is bigger than any international crisis. By tolerating the intolerable, the Members of Congress who are submitting to the "off the table" edict are surrendering our capacity to recover from disaster with humanity, solve our common problems in ways that reflect our common values, and serve as a force for good in the world. When the good will of the American people is cut out of the loop, no peoples -- not our fellow Americans, not other nations -- can look to us for help.

Making impeachment a reality is crucial if we are to rescue our Constitution, our national soul, and our self-esteem.

It is indeed a transcendent act.

3. 100% agree, with just one proviso.

That we can indict, try, and convict them both after the impeachment and trial in the senate is over. And then send them to the Hague and let the rest of the world have their way with them.

Hitler took the easy way out. These two have proven themselves to be too cowardly to do themselves. But just in case, let's put them both on suicide watch.

4. To the Hague, the world is watching.
Our courts are not prepared to deal with these criminals.

Just look at how they behaved in Bush v. Gore, and that was before the new Chief Justice was appointed.

To the Hague, and let someone else deal with Bush. He has no strategic intelligence value.
