Dems plotting against Lieberman?
Dems plotting against Lieberman?
Posted: Tuesday, November 07, 2006 3:29 PM by Mark Murray
Categories: Congress, Democrats, Midterms

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
NBC News received an unsolicited call today from an aide to a Senate Democrat who says that there is a movement afoot to deny Sen. Joe Lieberman the chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee should Democrats take control of the Senate. The aide, who works for a Democratic senator now sitting on that same committee, cites Lieberman's party apostasy, as well as his public consorting with known Republicans such as GOP Sen. Susan Collins, the current chair.

The aide says that there are others who share this sentiment, but calls to the Democratic leadership and another Democratic committee member yielded no insight into the insurgency. They hadn't heard a thing about it. Lieberman, as top Democrat on the committee, would be in line to be chairman if Democrats take control and if Lieberman remains a Democrat -- which he has said he'll be if he wins tonight.

Disinformation to make Joe out to be the "victim"

You know the Senate Dems will be kissing his ass if he wins (with a few exceptions).

5. Well if they had the balls
They would have already stripped him of his seniority, removed him from his chair positions and asked him to step aside and let the winner of the Democratic primary have a crack at it.

They didn't. So I don't expect this rumor is any more than a lot of wishfull thinking.

1. Don't believe it. Lieberman is gonna play BOTH parties
for the best deal. It hurts me to think of how much leverage the non-democrat is gonna have.

2. What an atrocity if the Democrats let him take charge
of that committee. He is one of the worst a-holes of our era.

12. It depends.
The repubs struck seniority as the deciding factor in the '90s. But each party/Congress makes up its own rules. Pelosi, rumor has it, has already come out in favor of seniority. That means old-time dems will get committee chairs without much hassle, something that a lot of dems seem to be completely in favor for ... when it suits them. Not in the case of Lieberman, where "seniority rules", a deciding factor in other cases, suddenly yields the wrong result and has to be abandoned.

Stripping Lieberman of seniority wouldn't be a violation of seniority, *if* they stripped him of his seniority when he ran as an independent. (Did Jeffers get any positions based on his seniority under the dems when he bolted the repubs?)

13. Well said.
They follow the rules that they made up, except when they don't want to. It's been that way for a long time, too.

Shame on Lieberman, he should lose all of his leadership seats for being a traitor to our party. :(

6. "consorting with known Republicans"
Who writes this stuff? Lieberman is not a Democrat, any more than Bernie Sanders.
:rofl::rofl:

7. That movement has been afoot in the open here for months.
Of course nothing we say is official, but it has been openly said here.

11. I think Lieberman will get his chairmanships, but I think that he will be
challenged by Democrats, especially those like Sherrod Brown and Jon Testor.

14. You guys all need to give this a rest, AND NOW
I'm absolutely serious. Shut up.

We've won. Don't go snatching defeat from victory by doing everything you can to push Lieberman into doing a reverse Jeffords. Let's take our winnings and move on. Anyone wanting to shoot themselves in the foot, please do so privately and in your own time. Don't mess with our hard fought majority.

17. Name calling is not an argument.
The problem is there is no way to compel people to shut up here, and railing about it just adds to the noise level.
