Terrorism: It's the GOP's new communism
By Tom Teepen
THE DEMOCRATS who would be president are fuming about a TV ad the Republican National Committee is running in Iowa, where the nominating caucuses are near. The Democrats' anger is understandable but the ad is doing them a service even so. It makes plain, and inescapable, the challenge their nominee will have to meet if he is to have something better than the proverbial snowball's chance of contesting President Bush's re-election. The political commercial claims that Democrats who dissent from the president's foreign policy, particularly his invasion of Iraq, are attacking him "for attacking the terrorists."
That's nonsense and nasty nonsense at that, but who's surprised? The tactic extends the partisan misuse of the terrorist threat that the GOP resorted to last year to nail down control of Congress. (A Republican challenger even managed to oust Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia by making him out as a wuss about Saddam and Osama. Cleland lost both legs and an arm in Vietnam.)
