I'm a Taliban Democrat. Are you?
Edited on Fri Aug-11-06 07:27 PM by femmedem
If you supported Lamont, you are, according to syndicated columnist Cal Thomas.

http://www.theday.com/re.aspx?re=5a5c5646-d4d0-41d2-9ae6-fc6fd957cf21

Here's his opening paragraphs:

"Taliban Democrats are voting to "Kill" their own:

The narrow primary defeat of veteran senator Joe Lieberman in Connecticut's Democratic primary is more than a loss for one man. It is a loss for his party and for the country. It completes the capture of the Democratic Party by its Taliban wing.

They used to be "San Francisco Democrats," a phrase coined by former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Jeane Kirkpatrick to describe the party's 1984 convention. But they have now morphed into Taliban Democrats because they are willing to "kill" one of their own, if he does not conform to the narrow and rigid agenda of the party's kook fringe..."

edit to add: Folks, does this warrant a call to the editorial board to demand they drop Cal for this? Can any of us who read papers who run this crap call and complain? And post that you did so here?

7. HAHA! Joe's defeat has them all in a total tizzy
While the Dems were reliably marching to the right, there was no problem, the GOP knew the Dems would never get elected that way. Now a progressive has defeated their fair haired boy on the wrong side of the aisle, oh, my, what shall they do? The LAST thing they want is an oppostion party that really is an opposition party and offers a clear alternative.

So expect them to keep hurling stupd epithets that apply much more to themselves than they do to any of us. The nastier they get, the more frightened they are.

And that is a good thing, folks.

14. How can 52% of CT Dem voters be "fringe"?
Isn't bush*'s 33% a bit more fringe-y than Lamont's 52?

18. How's this?
Cal Thomas, Unraveled

Cal Thomas, in an editorial that equates Democratic voters with a terrorist organization (Taliban Democrats are Voting to 'Kill' Their Own), has decided what's best for Connecticut Democratic primary voters, calling Democratic Senate nominee Ned Lamont's supporters the party's 'kook fringe'.
Just a few problems with Mr Thomas' characterization.
First, Mr. Thomas makes an assumption that the Iraq war is an effective response to terrorism. In fact, it is the opposite. The fact is that Bush has us bogged down in an ill planned war based on lies and misdirection that has made us less safe at home and less respected in the world. Bush's war has not reduced anti-American sentiment, it's fueled it. It has not reduced the risk of terrorism, it's inflamed it. It has limited our freedoms and stripped us of our rights.
As to the 'kook fringe' voters of Connecticut, 'fringe' is defined by Webster's as the 'peripheral' or 'extreme'.
The fact is that a recent AP-Ipsos poll has shown only 33 percent of Americans approve of Bush's handling of the Iraq war. Despite this fact, somehow 52%, or 146,587 Connecticut Democratic primary voters are labeled the 'kook fringe' by Mr. Thomas because they voted for Ned Lamont based in large part on his opposition to Bush and his handling of the Iraq war.
Now, how can that be? Most of America opposes Bush's policies. His approval rating is 33%. Yet somehow, we're the 'extreme' of the Democratic party.
Isn't Bush's 33% a bit more fringe-y than Lamont's 52?

19. It's excellent. It rocks.
:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

Two little things and one bigger thing:

Little #1: how about "it has fueled" rather than "it's fueled."

Little #2: maybe call it an op-ed rather than an editorial.

Bigger: The Day requires you to submit your name, address and phone number with your letter.

Thank you so much. A 52% fringe. Sheesh. We gotta keep calling 'em on that.

21. Another thought
Someone might also want to address his incredibly stupid anti-semitism claim by pointing to the fact that four of the 13 votes for Kerry/Feingold were from Jewish senators and that every Jewish senator except Lieberman (8 of them) voted for Levin/Reed.
What does being Jewish have to do with supporting bush's stupid war?

He does point to some incredibly ignorant remarks he weeded out of the blogs. If true, they probably are from the 'fringe'(What kind of jerk would make fun of Lieberman's wife's name? That's just lame.).

Maybe someone else can do that. A separate LTTE might be better.

22. I'm embarrassed to admit
I missed that part because once I read the Taliban Democrats part, I gagged and couldn't get any further.
But that's outrageous.

Thanks again for writing your LTTE. I'm hoping someone else nails him on the anti-Semitism. I'm part of a more local peace and justice group, and I can send them an e-mail asking for some action.

26. I'm a RML
According to a National Security Agency report, I, as a public librarian, am a Radical Militant Librarian. You didn't know that your local helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent librarian was a dangerous radical did you? Or that the American Library Association is one step from a second Al Qaeda! That just met in New Orleans.

And it gets worse: I am also an out, proud, card carrying liberal as a paid-up member of the ACLU! And even worse, I am an out and proud homosexual able to destroy every heterosexual family in Anerica (and Western Civilization to boot!) by my very existence! And, OH MY GOD, a damned destructive Democrat too. I never knew I had such power. And this from a wheelchair rider!

Republicans have been known to swoon and faint dead away in my presence!

answer, I guess, "the taliban republicans?" As they often target moderate republicans in primaries.
