It's like we're going backward.

Once America was seen as a beacon of hope and freedom. Today it's the world's bully.

We know how it happened. The smirking simpleton in the Oval Office, guided by Karl Rove, trumpeted by the venomous hatemongers of right-wing radio, and with the complicity of all but a few Republicans, discovered the ticket to political power: appeals to people's worst instincts.

And oh, how the people responded.

1. The allure of being the "worlds police"

was too difficult to refuse. 911 fueled the embers, Rove's breath brought it to flame.

2. Intolerance or tolerance does not matter on questions of liberty-including

civil liberty.

The Constitution does not say you must tolerate - it says we have certain freedoms and liberty to do what we choose, and others can go pound sand if they think what you do to be gross/bad in their eyes.
