Gov. Bush: Wilma response will 'be better'
Florida governor takes blame for distribution troubles

Thursday, October 27, 2005; Posted: 12:05 p.m. EDT (16:05 GMT)

POMPANO BEACH, Florida (CNN) -- Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said relief agency response to Hurricane Wilma will "be better" Thursday after residents waited for hours the day before for basic supplies such as water, ice and gasoline.

"Today is going to be better, tomorrow is going to be better than today, and the day after tomorrow will be even better," Bush said during a Wednesday news conference.

As the governor accepted blame for distribution troubles that have forced many to wait in long lines for free government water and ice, he also suggested that some residents failed to stock up adequately in advance of Monday's Category 3 hurricane.

"People had ample time to prepare," Bush said. "And it isn't that hard to get 72 hours' worth of food and water ... just to do the simple things that we ask people to do."......

1. Poor little Bush boys
Way to win over the constituency there, Jebba - accept blame, but not really accept blame.

Does this run in the whole family or what?

I am no fan of Jeb, but I think he is right.People could have at least gathered 3-4 days' worth of supplies.

5. I hate to break it to Jeb, but some people are... um... POOR.
The idea of being able to buy extra food and supplies for 4 days... hell, just the idea of having to pay MONEY for WATER... these things aren't so easy to do when you live hand to mouth and your hand's already fed your mouth for the week.

6. yes,
and some people have been raised to believe that someone else is always responsible for their needs. Where are the basic ideas of save a little "for rainy days"? Fill up the bathtub with water, add a little bleach, when hurricanes are on the loom.

Yes, some people are truly needy, but I believe that too many have just never learned to accept some responsibility for their lives.
What happens in life is always someone else's foult. Talk about "learned helplessness".

I have to admit that this is the first time I've ever agreed with our Governor. I'd never vote for him, though.

7. You're right, anyone can fill a tub with water. And there is something...
... to your point about responsibility. But a bathtub of water nor stocking up on non-perishable supplies does not mean you won't need ice, gas, and more drinkable water.

But basically, I firmly believe the ONLY reason for Jeb's statements was political: to divert any possible further blame on the federal government (i.e. his brother's FEMA).

4. Tomorrow is going to be better
because the press will leave and all the problems will be known only in isolated, localized pockets. Look how well things are going in Mississippi:

As we approach the two-month mark since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf coast, it is clear that many communities are still very much in need of relief. East Biloxi, Mississippi waited weeks for debris removal and at the time of this writing, is still waiting. Local groups in predominantly black areas report that Red Cross has yet to release supplies in their neighborhoods.
