New voting machines will fade as issue

So says Sec'y of State Eric Clark, counting on counties

By Charlie Mitchell
Special to The Clarion-Ledger

VICKSBURG — In two years, perhaps less, the vast majority of Mississippians will wonder what all the fuss was about, says Secretary of State Eric Clark.

The issue is voting machines, specifically whether boards of supervisors should accept the Diebold-brand touch-screen machines the state has agreed to provide at no cost to Mississippi's 82 counties to bring them into compliance with federal law.

To Clark, a Democrat, a former member of the House and a person with long family ties to Mississippi elections, the reluctance some local officials and organizations, including the state NAACP, have shown about making the change is something of a mystery.
Touch-screen machines are easy to operate, are already in operation in two Mississippi counties (Hinds and Rankin), in many other states, including Georgia. Perhaps best of all, they are being bought with federal funds requiring only a 5 percent state match, which the Legislature approved. Still, there's been a lot of niddling.

1. JUST SAY NO TO DIEBOLD
Im all for electronic voting...as long as it is OPEN SOURCE FOR INSPECTION BY THE PUBLIC...and a solid paper audit trail.

JUST SAY NO TO DIEBOLD.

2. Glad to see them
Glad to see these machines in operation, we have too many people who have problems reading the written ballots due to print size. The seniors in our district love the new voting machines. For myself, so long as they enforce valid picture Identification, I have no problem.

3. Without a verifiable paper trail, these things should have FRAUD
stamped on the front.

You may be glad to see them, I don't know your politics. But as a progressive, I think they are open to abuse and have been abused in recent elections.

5. i don't care how many gushing dems diebold trots out, the fact
of the matter is that the machines are NOT secure, the software is a suspicious mess and the results are questionable. No, no, no. As long as the voting infrastructure is in the hands of g.o.p. operatives and the apparatus has profound security and integrity issues, we're not going there. No verifiable paper trail and FULLY auditable results, NO VOTING MACHINES. Me thinks that perhaps instead of blowing all that dough on a p.r. firm, maybe diebold ought to look at attorneys. This bunch isn't going to stay in power forever, and once the investigations begin, diebold is going to have to explain to America why they helped bushco* steal several elections. I fondly call this "conspiracy to commit electoral treason." It's a damn good reason to seize and nationalize ALL VOTING AND ELECTORAL INFRASTRUCTURE AND APPARATUS.

7. What Raster said...
Are we not insane to have secret software on voting machines and tallying machines which have the ability to operate internal modems? It is widely reported that there WAS a dial-out in Warren County from a modem in the tally room on the night of the bullshit -and still unexplained - "terrorist warning" lockdown. These tally servers have NOT been modified to prevent the simple installation of an internal modem. The touch screens themselves have no ability to be audited outside of using the same modifiable and "secret" process that causes the concerns in the first place. Ask yourself - if this neocon cabal can lie us into an unjustified war, why would you trust them NOT to steal an election?
