The Downing Street Memo
By Maryellen Lake
June 10, 2005

The mainstream American media are desperately ignoring the smoking gun(s) found in the Downing Street Memo, recently released in Britain. Even as we speak, however, Rep. John Conyers has thousands of signtures to his letter demanding an explanation of the flim-flammery contained in those brief minutes of a meeting with Tony Blair and his very own "coalition of the willing." A few intrepid voices in the House are also calling for the empanelling of an Impeachment Inquiry.

George Bush, however, continues to insist that the memo lies. That should come as no surprise from a President who spends every waking hour in Never-Never Land. But Ken Mehlman of the RNC has flatly stated that anyone who has ever read the memo has discredited it. That's interesting - no one in the British government or in MI6 has discredited it. Are we to assume that they have never read it?

In any event, Bush's ass is very close to being put into a sling from which he may not be able to extricate himself - provided, that is, our media have the gumption to even ask him about the memo! But nobody seems to be asking except that crazy Conyers and, by now we hope, millions of Americans who are on the Internet and signing Conyers' letter and petitions like mad.

But (no pun intended) the man whose fanny is in the most danger is Blair. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. If he admits that the memo is, indeed, authentic, he will plant Bush's fanny firmly in the fishnet of possible impeachment thereby betraying his big, bullying buddy; if he denies and lies, his own backside is in danger of getting waffle-imprinted. Watching this unfold has the potential of becoming a new political sport!

1. The Sling
One thing that bugs me about ailsagirl post….I was thinking the EXACT same thing but didn't have a chance to say it LOL

I told my wife the other night (she is not politcial) that Bush and Blaire (aka The Killer B’s) had their ass in a sling from the Downing Street Memo. I would really like to see how they get out of this one.

2. Welcome to DU, Beaver Tail
:hi:

I hope the sling is such that the Killer B's (good one) won't be able to get out of it.

It'd sure wipe those smug, smarmy, self-satisfied grins off their ugly faces.

:patriot:

9. That last paragraph...
you posted here is cause to be glad. I had not yet made the Blair Butt In
Danger connection. Such is the fate of those who make a bargain with
the Devil: short term gain followed by long term hell.

12. Bush will get away with it
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 06:07 PM by depakid
because there's no opposition party in America, and the far right controls not only the ALL of the so called "mainstream" media, but also the voting machines in key precincts across the country. It's going to have to get (and it will get) really ugly here before anyone's held even the least bit accountible).

Blair, on the other hand, is going to be forced to hand over power early, and his reputation will be forever tarred. He should have listened to his wife Cherie- and not hadanything to do with the Bush junta. I almost feel sorry for the guy- he has a lot of years of life ahead- and he's going to live them in shame and regret.

13. don't believe a single word ken mehlman utters. He is a gay republican
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 07:16 PM by Raster
that hides his sexuality from "everyday" rank and file republicans but lives a second gay life, complete with undercover lover. Here is a man that fronts one of the most homophobic institutions today, yet is a homosexual. Talk about living a lie. How self-hating does one have to be to be to front for bushco*, the g.o.p. and be homosexual?

On edit: I'm a gay man. I resent the fuck out of capos and collaborators like mehlman. Does he think that when the American taliban loads the trains with the undersirables he and his male lover are going to get a free pass? Not hardly. You may not be on the first train ken, but rest assured, the fundies have your number and your reservation.

a black repub or a Jewish nazi, eh?

Mehlman is NOT "gay" in a garden variety sense. He's a "RoyCohn."

16. most definetly. like I said, how self-hating do you have to be to
front an organization that thinks you're lower than dirt. And he's not the only one. I would say in the g.o.p. top ten, at least three are gay. At least three.

15. Sling? Not likely. With a Republican House & Senate, a media
distracted by Jacko & Aruba missing-blonde-teen-of-the-week, I don't see impeachment in the crystal ball, much less anything even remotely resembling a sling. It would take a lot of public outrage before that happens, and I'm just not seeing it given the media as it exists today. I hope I am wrong about all this, but I fear I'm probably not.

17. The sad thing is that the asses
should have been in slings awhile back. Complicit/compliant mainstream media is to blame.
