It’s a Pain. Period
CBC News Viewpoint | June 6, 2005

Georgie Binks is a freelance writer living in Toronto. She writes for the Toronto Star and National Post, and has written for Chatelaine, Homemakers, Elle, Glow and Style at Home, as well as salon.com. Georgie is a former CBC radio and television reporter and editor. She has been a feminist since she wrote an essay in high school on "The Changing Role of Women in Society" at her mother's suggestion.

Recently I received a press release promoting a book entitled 28 Days: What Your Cycle Reveals about Your Love Life, Moods, and Potential by Gabrielle Lichterman. Lichterman, is the founder of Hormonology, apparently the science of planning your life based on your hormone cycle. Several days later, I picked up a copy of Cosmopolitan magazine and noticed an item on the cover, Your Period, What’s Normal, What’s Not.

Menstrual periods have a profound impact on women’s lives, but you rarely hear us talk about them. And that may actually be one of the reasons we’ve been suffering with them for a lot longer than we needed to.

If you’re a man and you’re reading this right now, you may be starting to avert your eyes and switch politely to another column, but read on if you want to learn something about what makes women tick.

I really enjoy this woman's writing.
