It was Labor Day. I was thinking about the plight of people in New Mexico whose income depends on tips to augment a pathetic wage that is half of the federal minimum.
Thousands and thousands of people in our state who labor at waiting tables and lugging food do so for a paycheck of almost nothing.

No wonder Labor Day has come and gone without much celebration and with almost no commentary about what hypocrites and fat cats like to deride as playing "the class warfare" card in American politics.
The rich and powerful have been waging a class war against the rest of us for so long and with so much tenacity and pervasive subtlety that many of us forget the basic fact and irony of working life in our country.
