"It is a melancholy object to those who travel through this great country, when they see the retirement villages, assisted-living communities, the dining establishments of Florida and Arizona with their early-bird specials, crowded with individuals of an advanced age, all in expectation of receiving their monthly stipend from the federal government. These citizens, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to accept a dole pilfered from the hard labor of their juniors, who as they themselves grow to maturity, face an uncertain financial future robbed of prosperity by those whose time is measured in months, not decades. I think it is agreed by all parties that this prodigious number of old people on the backs, or (given the impending tsunami of boomer retirements) at the heels of those younger ones, is in the present deplorable state of the nation a very great additional grievance; and, therefore, whoever could find out a fair, cheap, and easy method of making these old ones sound, useful members of the democracy, would deserve so well of the public as to have his or her statue set up as a preserver of the nation...."
