Powell says US has no plans to invade Iran
WASHINGTON The United States has no intention to change Irans regime and it has no plans to invade the nation neighboring Iraq, where 140,000 US troops are stationed, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said in an interview to be broadcast yesterday.

We are not getting ready to invade Iran, Powell told CNBC televisions The Wall Street Journal report when asked if having 140,000 troops in Iraq makes it easier to deal with Iran.

We have no intention of regime change. That is our policy: no regime change, he said, although he added: We dont approve of this regime.

It is up to the Iranian people to decide what they are going to do with respect to their future and how they are going to be led, Powell said.

88. uhh-ohh -- that means bush* is going to invade
with regards to Afghansistan -- we weren't going to topple the Taliban

and what about invading Iraq for WMDs that went MIA?

I still think it's up in the air -- based on "news" stories as to whether Iraq or Syria is next

not to worry - by the end of bush*'s August vacation in 2005 they'll be rolling out a "new product" and then we will know

24 May 2002

By MATT KELLEY, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States has no plans to invade Iraq or any other country, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Friday, but he refused to discuss the Bush administration's thinking about how to deal with Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Saying it would be "dumb" to publicly discuss military planning, Rumsfeld declined to address news reports that top military leaders had expressed strong reservations about launching a large military operation to oust Hussein.

Those concerns, according to reports in the Washington Post, USA Today and the New York Times, included worries that the U.S. military is already being stretched thin by operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the war on terrorism.

Details from the secret briefing paper, published in Londons Evening Standard, suggest that military commanders took part in a war planning conference with US counterparts as early as June 2002.

At the time, Prime Minister Tony Blair was insisting that no decisions had been taken on military action.

Todays leak, on the eve of a crucial debate on Iraq at Labours conference in Brighton, will fuel speculation that Mr Blair agreed in principle to join the US in military action at his April 2002 summit at President George Bushs ranch in Crawford, Texas something the Prime Minister has always denied.

Members of Bushco invariably say the opposite of what they mean. It's simple to translate their statements: "Yes" means "no." "Up means "down". "Good" means "bad." "Democracy" means "Fascism." "No draft" means "draft." And on and on and on.

The one where the liar says "I alway lie. I am lying now". Something like that. Anyway, Powell's statements and the liar's paradox both have to do with liars, and they both make my head hurt.

If Powell said the U.S. is not invading, then it's not invading, just cooperating with Israel on an air-strike probably. That's how these guys lie and tell the truth at the same time.

I remember hearing the same pronouncements about Iraq.

The U.S. may have no plans (that Colin is aware of) to invade Iran.

The 140,000 troops are probably compelling Iran to accelerate its
nuclear weapons program, which might be the subject of US/ Israeli
bombing raids.

According to PNAC documents
http://www.ecapc.org/pnac.asp

Iran, it says, "may well prove as large a threat to U.S. interests as Iraq has." The 90-page PNAC document from September 2000 says: "The United States has for decades sought to play a more permanent role in Gulf regional security. While the unresolved conflict with Iraq provides the immediate justification, the need for a substantial American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of the regime of Saddam Hussein. The plan calls for Permanent Military Bases in Iraq to dominate the Middle East including neighboring Iran.

68. Poor lil Colin , always the last to know?
Maybe he should check with Prince Bandar.

Seriously though, with the mess they have in Iraq I can't see how they could attack another country--especially one that has a real army.

72. Reasons why Powell can make that statement
gw* didn't/doesn't tell him anything
Rumsfeld didn't tell him his plans
He will be leaving soon and it would be a breach of security

and/or plausible deniablity

77. Yes, he clearly has no plans, personally, to invade
Now that's he's just a private citizen.

74. That's it then
They wouldn't lie about something like that.
And Powell has never been mislead by his masters...

78. Powell - a final lie and he's out of there
After the real agenda regarding Iran becomes clear, Powell will claim it was planned after he left. "I had nothing to do with that invasion plan".

85. My thoughts exactly!
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 02:46 AM by Barkley
Powell's comments were planned for just the purpose you mentioned

I just hope stands by his words "Its up to the Iranian people to decide..." after we invade/bomb/overthrow Iran.

But I'm not counting on it.

84. Like he knows what's going on
He's been kept out of the loop for three years. They used him for his reputation, but they lied to him whenever it suited their purposes.
