Some states hand women abortion-risk warnings
By Laura Meckler
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - In several states, women considering abortion are given government-issued brochures warning that the procedure could increase their chance of developing breast cancer, despite scientific findings to the contrary.

More than a year ago, a panel of scientists convened by the National Cancer Institute reviewed available data and concluded there is no link. A scientific review in the Lancet, a British medical journal, came to the same conclusion, questioning the methodology in studies that suggested a link.

end excerpt

Whether it is about the creation of the Grand Canyon, global warming, or science in general, the religious zealots and this administration are dumbing us all down. Welcome to the third world. We are behind in science and falling further behind as tax-cutting maniacs starve all of our research universities.

10. There's a precedent for it, though
Look at all the BS about tobacco that governments routinely endorse, most of which is unproven at best and dishonest at worst. The whole smoking scare began as a way for the coal industry to blame their workers for the respiratory ailments that were rampant among miners.

2. Disgusting.
Did you also hear that * is considering naming Dr. David Hager as head of the FDA's Reproductive Health and Drugs Advisory Committee? This is the guy who advises his women patients to pray for relief from cramps, and refuses to give birth control to any single woman, even for health reasons. Not cool. Has anyone else heard this? Combined with these "warnings" it looks like repro. rights are in serious danger.

:grr: :nuke:

8. Dr. Hager better not ever stop by my house when I have PMS with that bs
If anyone ever said that to me when I have PMS, he'd better hope the baseball bat is out of reach.

Well, if they decide to make "The Handmaid's Tale" come true, I may be too old to be considered "fertile" (although I am still fertile), I want it noted that I am a very good cook and would be much more useful in that capacity than being shipped out to clean up radioactive/toxic waste sites.

4. Somehow, I don't think a brochure with all the risks of pregnancy
is handed out. As for the association with breast cancer, not only has that now been proven false, there are plenty of things that are much more likely to increase your risk of breast cancer, including drinking alcohol, obesity, having your first child after age 35, etc. etc.

5. And there's a waiting period in Texas.
A woman goes in for her initial appointment & gets all the "information." Then, 24 hours later, she may return for the abortion.

Texas has 254 counties; it's a big state. Abortions are only available in 15 counties. The waiting period makes it very hard for women with jobs or family responsibilities. And the need for extra travel or accomodation makes the procedure more expensive.

6. New repuke symbol..
Totally stolen from another website....

The Republican National Committee announced today that the Republican Party is changing its emblem from an elephant to a condom. The committee chairman explained that the condom more clearly reflects the party's stance today, because a condom accepts inflation, halts production, destroys the next generation, protects a bunch of dicks, and gives you a sense of security while you're actually getting f*cked.

9. I'd just hand out flyer's with Karl Roves mug on the front and that would
prevent anyone from NOT having an abortion, it's what happens to unwanted children, they become Karl Roves of the world.
