India Test Fires Ship-launched Nuclear-Capable Missile
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBMP6M391E.html

BHUBANESHWAR, India (AP) - India on Sunday tested a nuclear-capable ship-launched missile off its eastern coast, an official said.

The Dhanush missile, capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads, was launched from an Indian navy ship in the Bay of Bengal, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Pakistan, which also routinely carries out missile tests, declined comment on the test but said it was against an arms race.

1. Well, why not? Any hope that the U.S. will be a sane and wise
equalizer in foreign affairs was shot in the last election.

2. Ship launched short-range ballistic.
Like a SCUD from a ship. No doubt more accurate.

3. Sunburn, Yakhont, Dhanush-making Carriers obsolete
To extend the reach of the "kill" capability of the Indian Navy
over the entire Indian Ocean region, it has homed in on
three variants of a new generation 300 km range
supersonic Russian cruise missile. These variants of the
Club ASCM, thus, called for its ability to be launched
from multiple platforms - they are to equip IN's
submarines, long-range maritime patrol aircraft and
new destroyers.

Significantly, the Indian Navy will be the first customer
of
a universal missile, the export version of that is called
the
Club. This second generation supersonic missile, dubbed
the SS-N-27 by NATO, has not even entered Russian
military service(4 yrs ago). Indian defense teams first
evaluated the Raduga 3M-80 Moskit supersonic cruise
missile. Later they examined its successor, the 3K55
Yakhont (SS-N-26), which again fell through, before zeroing in
on the Alfa cruise missile being developed by the Novator
design bureau. In the interim, the Navy purchased the
3M-60 (SS-N-25) ASMs and is standardizing this missile on
all its indigenous destroyers, frigates, and missile
boats.

A number of other Indian naval missile programs, with
Russian technical collaboration, are thought to exist though it
is difficult to verify some of these.
A naval variant of the Prithvi SSM, reported as the
Dhanush exists.

4. This one, being ballistic, should be visible from launch,

but faster and coming down at a high angle. It would be interesting
to know which is considered the worse threat, (vs Moskit) but I don't
expect we will be told ...

5. Missle Cruiser vs. Carrier?
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 01:33 PM by Poor Richard Lex
I don't know if they would necessarily make carriers obsolete. The USN has technology that shoots down incoming missles, and carrier planes would be necessary to hunt down the source of the launch.

7. Not a well understood problem, as least out here in TV land.
The missiles are a good deal faster than the planes, and the planes
need the carrier to do much of anything, and one can't necessarily
just shoot everything, especially when near land, as say in the
Persian Gulf. The planes also need to worry about missiles.

I'm not aware of any reliable means to take out ballistics coming in.

Recent information on the Moskit and counter-measures to it is hard
to come by out here in TV land, too.

OTOH, the cruisers would indeed seem quite vulnerable themselves, as
you say.

6. Pakistan has a long and distinguished history of terrorism. I think
India should take the excellent Bush example of pre-emptive strike to heart and go liberate Pakistan. It will not be quite pre-emptive, as Pakistani terrorism has killed tens of thousands of Indians. But, all the more justification to go liberate them. Thank you world-leader Bush. You have set the standard for morals and values. Thank you. The world should now follow.
Liberate Pakistan!
Liberate Syria!
Liberate Iran!
Liberate North Korea!

We have to wage wars or else how can we have peace?? Come on now, people.
