Unhappy Democrats Need to Wait to Get Into Canada
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Disgruntled Democrats seeking a safe Canadian haven after President Bush won Tuesday's election should not pack their bags just yet.

Canadian officials made clear on Wednesday that any U.S. citizens so fed up with Bush that they want to make a fresh start up north would have to stand in line like any other would-be immigrants -- a wait that can take up to a year.

"You just can't come into Canada and say 'I'm going to stay here'. In other words, there has to be an application. There has to be a reason why the person is coming to Canada," said immigration ministry spokeswoman Maria Iadinardi.

25. Remember that Ireland, although generally liberal
still bans abortion in its constitution. This might make a difference for a liberal seeking a new country.

83. I called the consulate today, they are very
strict about immigration, basically without an EU passport or a immigrant grandparent there isn't a prayer.

They did express sympathy for those who must stay in America. It made me feel good that they felt free to express their opinion.

112. Yeah right, the progressive Ireland
The Irish people have really progressive views on abortion, homosexuality etc. (sarcasm)
A friend of mine fled from Ireland a couple of years ago. He really hated the Irish attitudes. Now he's living in Finland.

Tarja Halonen the president of Finland (single mom at the time she was elected) used to be the chairwoman of the national LGBT association. Her popularity rating is around 80%. So, the political landscape is quite different in Scandinavia. There are homophobes and racists , like everywhere, but they don't hold political power.

35. They have severely tighten up due to ...
... Romanians and other eastern Europeans moving into Ireland. If you have parents or grandparents that are Irish, you can then apply for Irish citizenship. They have also tighten up on Irish citizenship being granted to non-Irish spouses.

BTW: Minuses: unemployment around 6.7%, single tax rate is 20% on first 28,000 Euros, and then 42% on balance, lousy food and lousy weather. Positives: fairly liberal (with the exception of attitudes on abortion), good Guinness, good scenery (when its not raining) and good pub-life.

50. does that mean
that my husband can go to Ireland, but I cannot? My hubby is currently looking onto applying for dual citizenship and since his father immigrated here in the early 60's and he has a lot of family still in Ireland it should be doable. But I was hoping to get citizenship for myself as well, so that I could work. Is that not possible? Lemmeno.

Marriage to an Irish citizen is also good for immigration status. I believe you'll have to take the residency route to citizenship, but you're still able to move there.

If you want to forgo politics completely, and just enjoy the food, the people and the good weather, it is a wonderful place. But Berlusconi is worse than weecowboy--picture weewee with a BRAIN. He owns every media outlet, and he rules with an iron fist. If you think it is bad here, it is worse there.

10. Is Fascism A Good Enough Reason
A totalitarian government run by one political party bent on reversing our civil rights, making it extremely hard to regain our voices. I would say that applying for citizenship in Canada is equivalent to seeking Asylum. But then again, I do not live in Canada, and do not know the answer to that question anymore. At least here and now.

As a Canadian that offends me....
I can tell you with 100% certainty that our borders are WIDE open to refugees, who are given cash, a health-card (that's free health care) and a court date in 2yrs, which most don't bother to show up for.

We welcome all of our brothers and sisters to the south! Heck, I'll even clear a spot on my own 72 acres for you good people!

The problem with this, as I see it, is that if you leave, there will be less of you to keep fighting in the U.S. I know I would not want to surrender my country so easily.

I think you need to stay, be strong, keep fighting, but my hubby disagrees, saying that there is simply no way for you to ever get through to the uneducated masses who blindly follow their leader.

For what it's worth, we are both sick to our stomachs today over this....for you good people and for the entire world!

19. You assume honest voting
and I can no longer assume that. As long as the Democrats continue to play along, the rigging of elections will only get worse.

I saw this coming a long time ago. The GOP was never happy with blacks being able to vote and now the Hispanics won't vote their way. I would say the touchscreen voting schemes were hatched at least 15 years ago by now.

There is no other explanation for a voting scheme which leaves no paper trail and is unauditable than an intent to commit fraud, if necessary.

talk like this.....I deeply feel for you, I do...I sympathize and I embrace you - I was in tears last night.

(especially those who feel their country has abandoned them - heartwrenching)

I will first say, that I agree with the notion that you should be moving to swing states in droves. We need the U.S to lead the world on progressiveness, we can't just let it fester with the religious right.

That said, yes, of course it's easier if you marry a Canadian. I work for IBM, and I saw SO many colleagues in the U.S, pre-election, moving positions within the company so that they could "report to" a Canadian manager. They did this in the hopes they can make an easier jump to Canada, if bushy got back in. It remains to be seen if they are successful, but it's a good strategy.

124. The only problem I see with the view that they'll be forced to clean up
their own mess - is that they won't. They won't be forced. Uh - excuse me but ... WHO will force them to? America just elected that many more enablers. WHO IS LEFT to force any accountability? Fewer of our people. People who, for the moment anyway, have little hope of building any sort of coalition to start reparing the damage. Because the bush victory will be read, WIDELY, as an affirmation of what he's been doing, and what his supporters have been doing. They're not about to start considering the other side now. Especially when they can claim that the other side has been discredited - and the majority proved THEM, NOT the other side, to be correct. This election has just verified everything the bad guys have been doing, and everything they're about. It's green-lighted the whole miserable works. It's going to be a LONG, MISERABLE, LONELY two years until the next Congressional elections, and I don't hold out much hope for them, either. When Nixon and Reagan were in, at least they had Democratic majorities they HAD to deal with. This jackass has NO viable opposition now.

I don't know much about employment in Canada, so I'll ask you. Do you know what it's like for immigrants with advanced degrees? I heard (this was several years ago) that Canada was suffering from the so-called "brain drain", ie scientists and whatnot were going overseas in droves for higher-paying jobs, leaving a major vacuum. Because I'm getting my PhD in a few years and am considering (since before the election) a move north of the border.

91. I love Canada!
I've visited many times: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise. I've always been impressed by how polite, courteous, friendly, and generous the Canadian people are. And then when one considers that they have far more progressive social policies (like health care for EVERYONE!) it becomes obvious that Canada is a far more civilized nation than the U.S.

Oh, and consider this: An American is four times as likely to be murdered as a Canadian. (And it isn't because more Americans live in cities: BOTH country's populations are 70 percent urban.)

117. Not factual
To qualify as a refugee you have to be from a country that oppresses its people and prove that you are in grave and mortal danger. Not so for US citizens.

I moved to Canada after the last election and it took me two years to settle in - I love it but to be totally honest the immigration process is nowhere as easy as you or the Canadian governement describe it.

Come January I qualify for Canadian citizenship and damn skippy i'm going for it!!!

Sounds like one would have a much better chance coming in as a skilled worker, rather than a refugee -- particularly one from the United States.

If I'd been single I too would have left in 2000. Hubby would never had heard of it back then. Now he's not so sure. I've contacted the Canadian consulate for applications.

62. You Had a Democratic congress (Senate and House) and a Supreme
Court that was left leaning for the times. That is what is different from today. You have none of that now. Going to Canada is of great interest to me- call me a wimp if you wish? But I know when we are out gunned and folks we are seriously out gunned here. YEAH NIXON WAS FORCED OUT OF OFFICE BUT THE DEMOCRATS HAD GREAT POWER IN CONGRESS. Stay and fight if you wish.. and I wish you all the luck I can muster.

15. Work permits are easy to get in Canada
As long as you don't mind working at a low-paying service industry job for a while.

A friend of mine went to B.C. and got his work permit within 2 months.

All he did was to get a job in stocking shelves and had the company file for his permit.

Once he got the permit, he quit his job and is now a software developer in Victoria.

I heard you had to be a permanent resident to get a work permit. A process which takes months if not years becuase of the backlog. Believe me I'd gladly take a low paying job if it meant I could stay.

26. Unchecked aggression
I think it would almost be delayed suicide for progressives to pick up and go now (not that I think many will, but this is just for argument's sake).

If we were to leave America, its nuclear arsenal and armed forces in the hands of the a) redneck bigots, b) uninformed morons and c) greedy shitheads who turned out and voted for Bush, the world would be a much more dangerous place.

The first thing we need to do is focus on the House and Senate. We have to hold accountable every Democratic Congressman who voted to let Shrub have the power to go to war. We have two years to prepare.

Then again, just writing inspiring drivel like that makes me almost want to puke. I honestly don't know if there's ANYTHING we can do to make a difference anymore. Between corrupt, lazy media and outright vote thievery, I can't figure out what to do. Moments like these, Canada looks pretty good.

86. I for one will stay and fight for what I believe!
My country, my religion, and my economy have all been hijacked, but I'll be damned if I give up! I read skinner's post on formulating a plan...well the first step is to counter the mass media in whatever way we can, and everyone reading these posts has an enormously powerful tool at their fingertips. Use it to rally others against policies which must be changed! Take a lesson from the Deaniacs and use all the tools at your disposal, but do not be afraid to get really grass roots and talk to people one on one...that's how it starts!
The lamp may be under the bushel basket, but the light still shines through the cracks. My family first arrived here long before the first Revolutionary War, and fought many many battles since...it is now my turn to really battle the ignorance, hatred, and bigotry which now threaten our "grand experiment"!
Move to Canada, I think not! We need a New America, and I'm workin' on it...how about you?

98. United States of Canada?
I saw a really funny graphic today (the only time I laughed all day) and it had an electoral map of sorts. Except all the blue states were the same color as Canada and it was called the "United States of Canada", and all the red states were called "Jesusland." The funny part is that all the blue states connected either directly with Canada or connected through other blue states to Canada (except Hawaii, but that doesn't connect anywhere anyway).

It got me thinking, maybe all the liberals could move to blue states and we could seceed and join Canada. I mean, the fundies don't want us anyway, what do they care if we leave? They might get a little pissed that we took our shit with us (like produce from California and Broadway musicals), but it seems like a small price to pay to get rid of us. What's in it for Canada? Well, warm vacation spots in California and Hawaii. The hustle and bustle of New York City. The entire west coast, which is lovely. A nice section of the east coast. Another great lake. Wisconsin cheese. Chicago architecture.

The fundies could build a big wall around the red states and Bushco could set up camp in Texas. Then they'd proceed to kill each other off and the world would ignore them. Meanwhile, the United States of Canada could become a bastion of true freedom and civil rights for all with great vacation spots to boot.

Sound like a plan? What do you all think? I mean, don't get me wrong I think Canada is beautiful, but I like warm weather and really dislike winter. So that's always been a hesitation for me when considering moving there.

We have alot of flaws in this country make no mistake about that. We are however the greatest country in the world and most powerful. By being so we have the opportunity to change the world for the better in the most profound ways imaginable. But people like yourselves whiny, defeatist adolescents need to go.
