S.Korea fires warning shots at North boats

Seoul, South Korea, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- South Korea's navy fired warning shots Monday after North Korean patrol boats crossed the maritime border, the military said.

The South Korean navy first broadcast radio warnings as three North Korean patrol boats neared the Northern Limit Line off the western coast, but the North Korean boats entered South Korean waters Monday morning, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a press release.

After warning shots were fired, the North Korean vessels retreated to the northern side of the NLL, a U.N.-imposed Korean maritime border established after the Korean War. The North's vessels, however, re-entered South Korean waters again some 20 minutes later. They finally retreated after South Korea again fired warning shots.

2. I spoke to a soldier this summer when he was home on leave.
He's stationed in S. Korea at the border.

He told me that there's an incident almost every day....With people dying sometimes. He was surprised at the lack of media coverage.

Like sleeping on a powder keg.

3. Maybe JK Should Use this?
After all, Putsch has been totally neglecting the North Korean threat(s) in his obsession about Iraq.

PANMUNJOM, South Korea (Reuters) - The United States has relinquished its last outpost in the Demilitarized Zone to South Korea (news - web sites) and cut troops there as part of a deal to give Seoul more responsibility for guarding the tense border with the North.

The change, which took effect at midnight on Sunday, is part of a much bigger picture in which the United States is cutting its forces on the divided peninsula by a third from 37,500 and moving bases further south away from the border.

"As previously agreed, transferring the role of security work at Panmunjom has been completed," a spokesman for the U.S. military command, Kim Yong-kyu, told Yonhap news agency on Monday.

Kim later told Reuters it was all part of a larger mission transfer, a reference to Washington's desire to reshape its forces and Seoul's intention to boost its defense capabilities.
