Japan won’t pull out troops from Iraq as hostage faces death

Agence France-Presse

TOKYO, Japan -- Japan insisted Wednesday it would not bow to the demands of Islamic militants in Iraq who have threatened to behead a Japanese man unless Tokyo orders its troops out of the country within 48 hours.

"The Self-Defense Forces will not withdraw," Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, a staunch US ally, said as he went ahead with a tour of typhoon damage in western Japan.

"We must not bow to terrorism," Koizumi said as he arrived in the town of Toyooka, as quoted by domestic media.

The Islamic militant group of Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi in a video released late Tuesday on the Internet showed a shaggy-haired Japanese-speaking man in a white T-shirt at the feet of three armed and masked men.

2. WTF are the troops doing in Samarra, anyways?
Last I heard they halted humanitarian work and never leave their hi-tech superfortress. They haven't done anything but just *be* there since last May, AFAIK.
