Sharpton: Young voters key to election

The Rev. Al Sharpton told a crowd of students at the University of Pittsburgh yesterday that young voters will play a decisive role in the upcoming presidential election, a role being overlooked by pollsters.

"You are the swingers that they don't know exist," he said during the afternoon rally for supporters of Sen. John F. Kerry in the auditorium of David Lawrence Hall. "Your generation, as it stands, has made polling obsolete."

Sharpton criticized Bush's references to religion and morality on the campaign trail, accusing the president of trying to deflect attention from his record over the past four years.

"I'm a preacher. If George Bush wants to be a preacher, I suggest we get John Kerry elected as president and we give George Bush a church in Crawford, Texas," he said to laughter, referring to the town near the president's Texas ranch.
