Mormon Church Enters Gay Amendment Battle
http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/10/102004ldsAmend.htm

why haven't these fools lost their tax-exempt status yet

Just two weeks before Utah voters go to the polls to decide whether to ban gay marriage the powerful Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has issued a statement condemning same-sex unions.

The statement, nearly 150-words, does not specifically mention the proposed amendment, but its meaning is clear. It says that men should only marry women and that ''any other sexual relations, including between persons of the same gender, undermine the divinely created institution of family.''

The Church has consistently opposed gay marriage and earlier this year said it supported a constitutional ban. But the new statement, from the First Presidency appears also to support denying same-sex couples any form of recognition.

1. It says men should only marry women . . . and more women,
then marry a few more.

Just don't marry any men. You can marry as many women as you want.

8. It is funny how they use the plural...
whereas the previous people have been very pointed in phrasing it as "one man and one woman".

2. but marrying and impregnating your 16 yr old cousin is moral?
Will the hypocrisy never cease?

http://www.polygamy.org

When: Thursday and Friday, May 20 and 21, 2004 - 9AM
Where: Court room of Judge Valdez, Mathison Court House

Once again a felon, allowed to live the illegal lifestyle of polygamy, is in court for the maltreatment of children. This particular criminal has been in Utah courts before, pleading no contest to child abuse and serving only 28 weeks in county jail.

The state of Utah continues to harbor these criminals who exploit, harm and violate the human and civil rights of the most vulnerable. Tax payers continue to fund their lifestyle while the court system is sapped again and again when they get caught doing what is known to occur.

Like cases in the past, these children are only a few of the numerous children abused by this man and many others like him every day in Utah.

We are asking the Attorney General's office, the court and other gate keepers of this state, "Will John Daniel Kingston get yet another slap on the hand for child abuse?" "When will the abuse of children, born by accident into polygamy, end?"

4. I have many Mormon friends
Let's not be too harsh on them, most of them are wonderful, accepting people. Although they disagree with my gay lifestyle (whatever ... I disagree with their bullshit religion) we are still friends, and some of them are surprisingly deep friendships considering the profound moral differences. I guess that maybe our moral differences aren't as different as the people representing us like to pretend. We all believe in love, justice and equality.

Obviously I disagree strongly with the Mormon church in their stance on gay marriage (and many other things), but I don't think most Mormons are bigots. They're brainwashed by their church, like any cult, and what they need is enlightenment, not to be persecuted for their beliefs.

5. Why in a post post-modern age do we respond to such crap?
The mormon dominion of "Deseret" just ain't that critical to the election. Let them do what they want, as long as they quit attacking and killng men, women and children travelling from the east to California.

7. I was raised mormon in a small mormon town in Arizona....
I got to see American religious facsism up close and personal. Yes, some of them are nice people. Some of them are the biggest hypocrites I've ever had the displeasure of knowing. And I know quite a few who sexually conform in the spotlight and crawl through the gutters when know one's watching.

The church uses fear and intimidation to keep members in check. No individual thinking is tolerated or allowed.

Just about the time the church's tax-exempt status was questioned because of discriminating against blacks from holding the priesthood, lo and behold, the profit, seer and revalator had a vision where--wait for it--God told him that it was not OK for blacks to hold the priesthood. How fucking convenient.

Although you don't hear anything about it, there is a huge controversy brewing because scientifically the book of mormon has just about been proven to be the load of horseshit that it really is. The church plays fast and loose with facts when it suits it and then condemns when it doesn't.

11. I have a mormon friend.
And I was surprised at how cultish the mormon church is. I read everything I could get my hands on and some of the dogma is truly alarming. I encourage others to look since I witnessed up close the damage these folks have done.

9. Not too long ago people were issuing anti-Mormon statements.
It is so sick when a minority that was persecuted becomes a persecutor.

But persecution and intolerance of others seems to be a defining characteristic of many religious groups.

19. Any church, that until recently, said that Blacks can't go to heaven..
.. is pretty much a closeted, bigotted religion. It's a freakin' mysogenists dream over there. Rove was right.. the Gay marriage amendment was a lovely red herring, designed to fire up the religous right.. and it worked.
