AUSTIN - Three defendants in the Texans for a Republican Majority campaign-finance case made their first appearance in court Monday to designate lawyers.

State District Judge Bob Perkins held the attorney designation hearing for John Colyandro, Jim Ellis and Warren RoBold. Colyandro is executive director of Texans for a Republican Majority, or TRMPAC. Ellis is executive director of Americans for a Republican Majority, and RoBold is a fund-raiser for both organizations.

The three political associates of U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay were indicted on charges of illegally raising corporate money to help the GOP take control of the Texas House in 2002 elections and elect Tom Craddick as speaker.

Colyandro and Ellis are charged with money laundering for allegedly using a Republican national committee to funnel illegal corporate money into state legislative races in 2002.

2. So Much For This Scandal Just Being the Allegation of a Disgruntled Democrat
Some of Delay's Internet defenders claim that Delay's legal troubles is solely the Democratic Congressman who filed an ethics complaint on DeLay. The TRMPAC scandal looks like it'll go way beyond that; records are surfacing and becoming court records--records of public record--and at least some of Delay's aides are likely to go down. So may DeLay himself.

What I find amusing is that some of the laws that look to be tripping up DeLay are over a century old and were enacted under the great Texas Democratic governor Jim Hogg. While Hogg's views on race are thoroughly deplorable by today's standards, it's fun to imagine this hand from the past reaching out and grabbing the Bug Man. Perhaps not as good as being arrested and jailed by the Earp brothers, but fun anyway.
