Poll: Youth Tie Bush, Draft Reinstatement
WASHINGTON - In spite of denials by the Bush administration, half of young Americans believe President Bush (news - web sites) wants to reinstate the military draft, a national poll suggests.

The National Annenberg Election Survey found that 51 percent of adults age 18 to 29 believe Bush wants to reinstate the draft. Eight percent said Kerry supports bring back the draft, and 7 percent said both want to. A fourth of those polled said neither candidate favors the idea.

Both Bush and Kerry say they don't support a renewed military draft. Earlier this week, the House defeated a bill paving the way to a draft 402-2. House Republicans have sought to quash the persistent Internet rumor that the president wants to reinstate the draft if re-elected while Democrats have fanned the flames on the rumor.

"Young voters are much more misinformed about the presidential candidates' positions on the draft than the population in general," said Kate Kenski, an analyst at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center.

31. I hear there's rumors on the Internets!
Forget all this talk about the DRAFT!

Printable pdf: http: http://somnamblst.tripod.com/draftalert.pdf

In May, the Seattle Post Intelligencer published an article about a document they received through the Freedom of Information Act. It was revealed that the SSS is currently “designing procedures” for the implementation of a “Skills Draft” after holding a top-level meeting on it with Deputy Undersecretaries at the Defense Department. This draft would change the very mission of the Selective Service and require “virtually every young American”, male and female ages 18-34, to register for the Skills Draft and list all the occupations they are proficient in to fill labor shortages throughout nearly the entire government.

Here, for the first time, is the FOI document itself:

http://blatanttruth.org/selective_service091304.pdf

This document is real, having been acknowledged by the DoD and the SSS when they said no action is being taken on it at the present time, as reported:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/171522_draft01.html

Although Congress would have to approve new legislation to create a Skills Draft or reinstate the combat draft, Family Circle reported in its July 13 issue that Karl Rove has polled GOP members of Congress in September 2002 to see if they would support the President if he requests reinstatement. The Republicans said they would vote for the draft.

In addition, the SSS itself has said that it is “designing procedures” (Seattle PI, May 1, 2004) to implement the skills draft, meaning designing the compliance cards and the data fields needed to keep track of “virtually every young American” and their skills. Acting Director of the SSS Brodsky has also said the Skills Draft is the “top priority” of the Selective Service for 2004. The Issue Paper options include:

- Allow a non-combat draft for shortages in critical skills, without calling a combat draft.

- Fill labor shortages of all kinds throughout not only DoD but the Dept. of Homeland Security and other agencies, especially high-paying professionals like computer networking specialist or linguist.

- Create a single-point, all-inclusive database, in which every young person would be forced to send in a “self-declaration” of all of their critical skills, chosen from a long list of occupations like the Armed Forces Specialty Code. The usual penalties of imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine would apply to all non-registrants.

In contrast to this planning and preparation to create a targeted draft, Kerry plans to spend an additional $7 billion to strengthen the Volunteer Army in what is essentially a “No-Draft Plan”. Moreover, Kerry is strongly opposed to the neo-con plan revealed in Wes Clark’s book Winning Modern Wars, in which Clark was told by a senior Pentagon official that invasions of Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Sudan and Somalia were planned and still to come over the next three years.

3. This is refreshing to see
It should be clear to any rational person that we can't sustain our troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan, and with Iran and Syria possibly on the horizon for the neocons, of course a draft is needed.

Anyone between the ages of 18 and 30 who votes for Bush needs their head examined. Actually, anyone who votes for that fuckwit does.

5. If I were a yute today (<--Pesci)
...then I'd have to ask myself, at the very least, "Am I willing to chance it?" Any reasonable yute should answer HELL NO. And according to this report, only barely more than half of them are reading Bush correctly, while the other half are still whistling past the graveyard. Sheesh.

Wake up, my yuteful friends.

8. I don't think young voters are any more misinformed
than the general population. I think they just happen to be more concerned about this issue because it directly affects them. I don't think people my age happen to be misinformed because they are distrustful of this administration. Bush has already sent a lot of young people off to fight a war for no good reason, and the man apparently has no regrets about it. This seems like an attempt to discredit the young voters by essentially say they're dumb. A lot of younger voters favor Kerry, so they must be dumb, right?

Just like the old lines "A Republican is a Democrat who got mugged" or "A Republican is a Democrat who started paying taxes" or any of that other phony bullshit. I've been mugged. Didn't make me a racist or Republican. The younger generation is our greatest hope!

11. we all know bush won't lie to help himself get elected
The draft will be back if bush is elected or steals the election again. It is inevitable because he is terribly short of bodies in Iraq now, and with his making threats to Iran he is making it impossible not to bring back the draft.

He would never admit it either because that would be the kiss of death for his campaign.

30. Bush made promises before 9/11.....
then "everything changed" and he got away with breaking those promises. If Bush wins reelection I have little doubt that the U.S. will get attacked again, possibly in a big way, then he'll have a good reason for imposing the draft.
