WT: Bush readies 'significant speech' to rebut Kerry's debate attacks

Bush readies 'significant speech'

By Bill Sammon
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

President Bush, stung by the erosion of his lead over Sen. John Kerry in post debate polls, has abruptly scheduled a major speech for tomorrow in hopes of halting Mr. Kerry's momentum.

In a rare, last-minute alteration to the presidential schedule, Mr. Bush has scrapped a planned talk on medical liability and instead will give what the White House called a "significant speech" about the two central issues of the campaign — the war on terrorism and the economy.

The president is said to be eager to rebut Mr. Kerry's attacks on such issues, especially those that came during Thursday's presidential debate.

"There has been an attempt by the president's opponent to launch false attacks and mislead the American people on these big priorities," White House press secretary Scott McClellan told reporters aboard Air Force One. "There are some big differences facing the American people, and the president wants to highlight those differences."

The Kerry campaign was delighted that the Massachusetts Democrat has forced the president into reactive mode.

Kerry spokesman Phil Singer ridiculed Mr. Bush's decision to give a major speech, which will be delivered in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

"George Bush has spent the last few months resorting to half-truths on the stump. Now he's going the whole way," he said. "A president needs to be forthcoming and straightforward about his polices, and if the last few days are any indication, Wednesday's speech will be neither."
----------
Caught this over at FR. Some seem to think this could be the "October Surprise."

I think it's also funny that when you put Bush unchallenged on stage, he'll ramble on and on about whatever nonsense he wishes to spew. But when put in front of 60+ million potential voters and face-to-face with Kerry, he shows his true colors and wimps out.

This "significant speech" is nothing more than the GOP playing up this rally speech to get it on television. Knowing that he will go unchallenged up on that stage, he will hope to win back those swing voters he lost. Kerry needs to immediately respond the moment he gets off the stage.

78. Will the networks allow Kerry equal time to refute Bush's speech?
This is really an unfair tactic by the administration and the public should not stand for it. The Kerry campaign should be fighting this. It's too close to the election for this not to be purely partisan political speech.

7. exactly
this is the repugnants admitting that Bush* can't think on his feet, (and probably not at all for himself) and it takes them the better part of a week to figure out how to rebut Kerry's remarks.

Add to that, they aren't giving Kerry a stage to respond to Bush*'s pathetic lies.

I'm sure that he will have a teleprompter for this "speech."

Truly pathetic.

8. It's easy to win a debate against no one.
And, sadly, it's worth just as much to those who don't see the point behind it. Unchallenged, Bush can use his rehearsed script to stun over people who don't know what a debate means, who believe that if no opponent is on the stage, the drivel he spouts has no opponents.

I just hope his earpiece malfunctions again. "Let me finish" sounds so much more impressive when you're giving a speech than when you're having a debate.

I just can't believe he Effing won't let go! You think he could wait till Friday. but no. He just can't believe he lost the debate. And he wants to talk uninterrupted, the only way he is used to. What a lily livered coward. I hope people see him for what he is. A spoiled brat who can't ever let anyone else get any credit. He is acting as if one lousy debate were the end of the world. His lack of graciousness in defeat could well cost him the election. Let us hope so.

This could be the hint for red October.

Why red? Because Bush could announce we have bombed 'terrist sellz' in Syria.. which wasn't an 'axes' of evil, but Syrians have been chopping down cedar trees in Lebanon for centuries and they weren't using chain saws. An that'z the truth--Big as Dallas

21. Email the newspaper about this
Here is what I sent them.

It is unethical in the extreme for Bush to make a significant speech the same day and just before the Vice President debate.

If he is going to try to sway the voter toward Cheney with this speech, John Kerry should be allowed to air a rebuttal on Wednesday.

34. Bush's speech isn't until Wednesday
so I don't think it will distract much from the vice-presidential debate. It could cut the post-debate discussion short, I suppose, but apart from the White House's description of the speech as 'significant', I can't see anything that shows this will be different from any other speech these days - reported in newspapers, and sound bites on TV news, but not full coverage of it on TV.

It's just Bush's attempt to say something without getting instantly proven wrong and stupid.

I don't see how this is going to help him at all. Kerry has 2 more salvos to get in still.

Still, maybe he has learned something from the drubbing he received last week.

30. Bush's new message is Passing a Global Test, if Kerry debunks
that today, Bush will be crushed. Bush's spin will be how he doesn't have to ask rogue nations for permission to fight terra and Kerry wants to get permission (actually be a diplomat, aghast) to protect America. Kerry can fire this right back at Bush, if Bush would pay attention and open his eyes to reality he would understand that he doesn't know how the world works. The world doesn't work by killing anyone who doesn't believe in Jesus. Kerry can hit this one out of the ball park BEFORE Bush can even open his mouth tonight. Please, everyone write to Kerry's campaign and get the word out to talk about this Global Test that Bush is obsessed with now. If it's not one obsession with Iraq, now it's Global test...he's a poor loser.

Then why did they have to outsource the Tora Bora operation because Musharreff wouldn't let American soldiers operate in Pakistan?

What about when he begged, "pretty, pretty, pretty please China, give us our spy plane back"?

What happened to bush*s assertion that he could just "jawbone the Saudi's/OPEC to open the spigots"?

57. For the non-golfers out there
a "Mulligan" is a do-over. If your tee shot skips ten yards in front of you, or sails irretrievably out of bounds into the woods, and you're not real strict about keeping score, a golf partner might say "take a mulligan." In other words, do it over.

That's what these ratfuckers think they can do. they're dreaming.

But anyway, keep this meme goin'. It's GREAT, especially with, you know, golfers (who do tend to vote on the conservative side.)

Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 10:52 AM by goclark
needs its own thread so everyone will have a talking point.

Love the connection with golf, it's a conservative sport.
And,everyone should remember the *'s famous golf shot in F 911.

He's campaign is really in a stew so here is their little receipe to climb out of the pot.

No way Jose would I listen to the same stuff warmed over.

All they know is dirty tricks! They are extremely skilled with the behind the scenes crap that happens to stick with some Amerikans.

Now that he has made a complete fool of himself with millions of people it should appear that he is stewing in his own juices.

Kerry gaining momentum. Bush probably will explain that a "global test" is a bad idea because it is hard work being stupid and wrong.

"Saddam was a bad man. He gassed his own people."

"The Iraqis are a free people now."

"It's hard work puttin more money in the pockets of tax-paying 'Muricans."

"We don't send mexed missages to our troops. 'Murica is safer."

Nothing new from Rove. I can't wait to hear how Kerry will reflect on this. I love Liz's idea about calling this The Mulligan Speech.

64. Wasn't Bush going to hold a series of speeches a while back
in regard to Iraq and what is going on there? I seem to recall only one speech of that type.

This makes Bush appear even more cowardly. He can't rebut Kerry when he's on the same stage as him, so he must do it during one of his loyalty oath required revival meetings. Pathetic.

Bush could hire the best speech writer/speech coach in the country (which he hasn't)and he would still be unable to deliver it. Karen Hughes and company are as inept as their boss the POTUS.

82. Maybe Boosh could deliver one of Peggy Noonan's insane speeches
I just found a snippet of a draft of Noonan's speech for Bush:

"As freedom's bombs exploded on the tarmac of Iraqi liberty occupation, at home we are sowing the seeds of peace's daisy. Furthermore, when I looked into the glittering, diamond like eyes of Rumsfeld, I feel my maker's hand gently caress my soul. Ah liberty! May the rapture of Reagan's seed wash all of us away in Joy."

69. Bush can help Kerry by keeping the debate going
Kerry is still behind on who will better handle the war in Iraq and who will better handle terrorism. Forty-five minutes just wasn't enough to expose all of Bush's lies. Kerry wins on all the other issues. Kerry needs a little more time on these. Thank you, GW Bush!

YOU DON'T GET TO PLAY THE POINT AGAIN! Can you believe this--HE'S FUCKING PULLING A PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE ON THE DEBATES!

"George Bush has spent the last few months resorting to half-truths on the stump. Now he's going the whole way," he said. "A president needs to be forthcoming and straightforward about his polices, and if the last few days are any indication, Wednesday's speech will be neither."
Saying that is NOT enough--Kerry had damn well better retaliate with a press conference before the town hall debate!

80. Karl Rove's powerpoint presentation
Back in 1998/1999 when Karl Rove et al first descended into Austin,TX, he gave * a powerpoint presentation. In that he pointed to one of the boxes and said to the moron, "this is what you are going to run on - LEADERSHIP." Apparently the sack-o'shit had figured that lacking any real qualities, the one most easily feigned was leadership and strength. All you had to do was squint your eyes and thump your fist on the desk while repeating "I am a shhtrong leader. I am a shhtrong leader.." And if elected, just STICK with the (failed) policies.

Unfortunately in a real debate facing real issues against a real leader, all that doesn't hold up. No wonder Karl's campaign has hit the panic button.

I'm at a loss for words.

How can anyone trust the creeps occupying our White House. How on earth do they have an ounce of credibility?

The sheople will eat this up, the motives are so transparent, the method so phony. Yet I guarantee you on Thursday we will be hearing "Bush gets bounce from his speech!" permeating TV and radio. It's bullshit, he gets this pulpit because he is Idiot King.

I truly despise the man and his syndicate.

88. I agree with all the posts here.
He can't wait until Thursday? What's the hurry?

There's one BIG problem with Bush going on tonight with a "Correct the Damage Speech". It's BUSH himself. He has NO concept of the concept of overkill. Overexpose. Voter fatigue. Voter boredom.

Bush is boring. He's nothing but a used car salesman. He reeks of insincerity and lies.

And now they're going to inundate us with his face and his voice, 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Just imagine how that will go over.

Even his most loyal followers will turn off the TV.

90. That's the only way this chucklehead can compete..
cue cards, teleprompters, speeches written by Rove and mouthed by Karen Hughes on the sidelines. He can't possible appear in public unscripted, uncontrolled, and unadored. The Americans SAW what he is REALLY like when he was forced to do the debates... even with all the rules he insisted on, he still came across as a bumbler who is incapable of running our country.

All parents should ask themselves before they vote: Which man would you REALLY trust your child's life with? After viewing Bush "unplugged" at the debates, does he REALLY inspire confidence? Or are you just afraid to admit your mistake? It's okay to pretend you support him to your church, your friends, your family.. just vote for Kerry when you're all alone in the voting booth. Do it for your children.
