Voting Machine Controversy (Ohio)
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 07:18 PM by sybylla
http://www.cleveland.com/election/index.ssf?/base/news/106207171078040.xml

Columbus - The head of a company vying to sell voting machines in Ohio told Republicans in a recent fund-raising letter that he is "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year."

The Aug. 14 letter from Walden O'Dell, chief executive of Diebold Inc. - who has become active in the re-election effort of President Bush - prompted Democrats this week to question the propriety of allowing O'Dell's company to calculate votes in the 2004 presidential election.

O'Dell attended a strategy pow-wow with wealthy Bush benefactors - known as Rangers and Pioneers - at the president's Crawford, Texas, ranch earlier this month. The next week, he penned invitations to a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser to benefit the Ohio Republican Party's federal campaign fund - partially benefiting Bush - at his mansion in the Columbus suburb of Upper Arlington.

Glad to see this out.

Ohio is a great bellweather state. If we can unlock the GOP connected crimes there we can really expose the whole can of worms.

8. Someone needs to issue the "Hacker Challenge" to Ohio's Sec of State
Blackwell's getting a free pass from the Columbus Dispatch newspaper, on his voting machine scheme.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Akron Beacon Journal and Dayton Daily News are itching to run with the story, but, at present, its a computer geek story... everyone's eyes (including the Reporter's) would glaze over with the details.

Bev Harris' people (DemActivist?) issued a "Hacker's Challenge" in Georgia: "Give us access to a touch screen machine and we'll hack into it". Georgia officials have been back pedalling and hand-wringing ever since.

Won't someone (qualified) issue a similar challenge to Ohio officials?

Between DUers and ODP, we can turn out big crowds in front of the state office bldg to publicize their refusal.

9. Maybe
we could raise enough money here to send DEMACTIVIST, BevHarris, and at least one of the other experts to Ohio if we can mount a challenge.

What do you think?

37. Let's see how the GA challenge plays out first
Any "hacker challenge" is fraught with danger IMO. And it can not even address the "insider fraud" angle.

...they're turkeys!! Johnny, can you get this? Oh, they're plunging to the earth right in front of our eyes! One just went through the windshield of a parked car! Oh, the humanity! The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement! Not since the Hindenberg tragedy has there been anything like this!

I'm not sure why I thought that was appropriate. Maybe because those Diebold voting machines and the guys who push them are turkeys.

32. Tecumseh was a warrior
He didn't believe in the common practices of the time, such as the torture of prisoners, and he had incredible vision of the white man and what he would do to the native peoples, but he wasn't a chief. He was a warrior who led, and chiefs gladly followed him.

13. Let's smother Ohio media with letters letting them know it is not just
a geek thing. Lets let them know we are interested in this. Write one email and use Congress.org to send out mass emails. To make it a little easy, the following are three links under Congress.org for the state of Ohio. Each link will send five individual emails each. Each media recipient believes it is getting an original individual email. Use all three links. On each, pick five newspapers, click compose, paste your message and send it off. Let's see if we can make a difference!

18. Done -
Thanks for making it so easy!

Dear Editor: As a concerned citizen, I urge you to investigate how this Ohio corporation's security-flawed product may influence the future of Ohioans and America. Furthermore, citizens of Ohio should be informed about issues regarding allegations of "conflict of interest" and heavy-handed political influencing that may jeopardize the security of our voting process. Ohioans deserve resources on these newsworthy issues. Your publication can claim a place in resisting instances of voter-machine fraud and help voters make informed decisions. I look forward to seeing your call for a fair and balanced public challenge to Diebold.

Unholy preposterous indefensible fireballs.

He wins the prize of the 2003 for idiocy.

There is not even a brush with lies here.

If he goes down, does Diebold go down?

Utterly unbelievable.

I can just see him with a poster of Bush in his jail cell.

19. Just a plain simple conflict of interest
If the Diebold head exec. were contributing to the Dems we'd hear all about it EVERYWHERE on every station and in every newspaper.

A voting machine company that has direct affiliation with
any particular political party is a MAJOR confilct of interest.

No rocket science here.

Denial is the issue.

Anyone who doesn't see it just doesn't want to see it...probably because they support the Neoconvicts.

30. Here's something you can do...
Email this quote to the Secretary of State for your state.

Make it clear that a quote like this from the CEO of an election equipment company rasies a red flag about the veracity of the system.

That's what I did and I was contacted by my Sec of State / elections board office in less than two hours.
