Wisconsin plane crash kills 3 men (2 Iraq vets, 1 an FAA inspector)

Two Chicago-area veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were among three men killed in a plane crash in southeast Wisconsin, authorities said Friday.

Air Force Reservists Brian Whiteside, 37, of Lake Zurich, and Vincent Bobowski, 42, of Bristol, Wis., were killed Thursday along with Henry Grochowske, 48, of Genoa City, Wis., when the twin-engine Beech B95A crashed on takeoff from Burlington Airport at around 4:30 p.m., officials said.

Whiteside, a flight instructor, and Bobowski, an inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration at O'Hare International Airport, were flight engineers with the Air Force Reserve's 440th Airlift Wing, 95th Airlift Squadron, based in Milwaukee, said unit spokesman Dennis Mehring.

Whiteside joined the unit in 1996 and Bobowski in 1999, Mehring said. Both helped fly C-130 transports on missions from their base in Kuwait.

Federal officials have not pinpointed a cause but plan to have a preliminary report in a week, said John Brannen, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board.

He was not sure who was flying the plane. Whiteside and Grochowske, both licensed pilots, were in the front of the four-seat plane and had access to the flight controls, he said. They had flown to Burlington from Westosha Airport in Wilmot to pick up Bobowski and were apparently trying to return to Westosha, Brannen said.

The plane hit trees about a quarter-mile from the airstrip, he said.
