"The greatest threat to American security after 9/11 is Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden," Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy told CBS television.
"We had an effective program to try to deal with Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. We were diverted to going into Iraq. And as a result of going into Iraq, we see we are locked in there in a quagmire," the Massachusetts senator said on the "Face the Nation" program.
Kennedy said Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi had given a "rosy assessment" of the situation in his country that was "in conflict with the national intelligence and in conflict with the reports that are coming back."
"The facts, the growth of violence, the growth of violence in Iraq, says a lot more than political-speak does," Kennedy said. "We have to free ourselves from the lies, the distortions about Iraq. Every time we have these misstatements, every time we have these lies, we sink further and further into the quagmire," he said.
During a visit to Washington last week, Allawi vowed that Iraqi elections would proceed as planned in January, insisting that "we are succeeding in Iraq."
