National Guard Won't Make Quota
National Guard Won't Make Quota

WASHINGTON, Sept. 24, 2004

(AP) The Army National Guard will fall 5,000 soldiers short of its recruiting goal this year, in part because fewer in the active-duty force are switching to part-time service, knowing how frequently Guard units are being dispatched to war zones, the Guard's top general said Thursday.

It will be the first time since 1994 that the Guard has missed its sign-up goal.

Army Lt. Gen. H. Steven Blum, chief of the National Guard Bureau, said in an Associated Press interview that he's concerned by the shortfall but believes it will not be a long-term trend.

"This is something that can't be ignored. I've got to watch it every day," he said. "But it's not something that I would say indicates that we're breaking. I think it indicates that the recruiting climate has gotten tougher, and that means we need to adjust to a tougher market."

14. the hold-up is that the rich can't put their kids in the Nat'l Guard.

Because so much of the Guard is now being sent to Iraq, it is no longer a safe haven for the rich to use for their precious Biff, Chip, and Thurston III. Repubes are struggling mightily to come up with legit-sounding alternatives and/or new faces for champagne units. They HAVE to have the backdoor in place before the draft is announced.

6. indicates that we're breaking
could be , or it could be that people don't want to run off and die in Iraq. Car bombings and sniper attacks when not done on a Playstation 2 can scare most people.

7. Excellent post
The PS2 jibe is a classic. Yes, in the land of the permanent video game, no one wants there pleasant, pixelated violence to jump off the screen at them.

8. Bu$h is rapidly destroying our capacity to defend our nation.
He lied us into a completely unjustifiable war in order to take over the world, kills off and critically injures a bunch of our volunteer army, spends all our money and drives our nation into crushing debt, and uses up all our resources on the war.

Republican logic.

Only a fool would join the military right now.

10. Can we sign up the twins?
Barbara and Jenna ought to make a little dent in the shortfall. Maybe they can be used to recruit other patriotic repugs into signing up for Guard duty.

12. Kerry needs to jump on this
Remember the "two divisions are not ready for duty" crap from Bushco during the 2000 election? Well, these bastards have destroyed our entire military. They should not have a pass on this.

18. Sad thing is with all these hurricanes, if not the boogyman terror threat,
we really need National Guardsmen. A sensible response to 911 (assuming for a moment that it wasn't LIHOP) might have included strengthening and training National Guard units, not SENDING THEM OVERSEAS.
