4. Thanks, Karl but that doesn't give me
a number for the airport. I don't know what airline he is flying. He is 74 years old and I'm nervous.

7. Okay, try this number, it's the FBO where I park when I fly into there,
they will know what's going on.
602-273-3770

(Sorry, FBO is 'fixed base operator'...it's for corporate planes, NOT airlines but you can bet they are up on the situation. Good luck with your pop.

13. Just checked on a "pilots only" site, it looks like a temporary glitch,
traffic should resume in a few minutes. Stay cool. ;-)

3. How can radio transmission problems shut down all S Cal?
I've heard of certain airlines being shut down, but all S Cal? How can that happen?

5. The problem is at a central transmission location that services all
airports here.

6. Maybe ATC?
Maybe a communications problem with Air Traffic Control...perhaps at one of the Flight Centers?

That would be a reasonable explanation.

9. I think that is right.
The last few hours have been eerie...like 9/11 was, without any planes flying over us.

10. I'm no tinfoiler, but what little I've learned so far leads me to actually
believe this could be some sort of hi-tech "attack"...it's not that hard to do.

8. SoCal...
...controls all of SoCalif. I am sitting here and watching planes come in on the approach at SMO. It could be that individual towers are communicating, but that the overall system is out. Or since I am watching them on the approach path - they are coming in by using light signals and there is no radio communication. I just tried to get ahold of someone who would have more info, but I could not contact him on a landline.

Interesting info and I will try and find out more.

15. FAA radio outage
FAA radio outage affects airports, flights in Southern California

LOS ANGELES – Radio failure at a Federal Aviation Administration control facility forced some airports in the West – including Lindbergh Field – to hold flights on the ground Tuesday afternoon, a Los Angeles International Airport spokesman said.

The outage occurred at 4:40 p.m. PDT at the Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center in Palmdale, in the desert north of Los Angeles, said Gaby Pacheco, citing information from a regional FAA office.

Control of the airspace was turned over to other air traffic control facilities.

"We want to stress there are no safety issues, just delays because control over the air space has been turned over to other air traffic facilities," Pacheco.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/state/20040914-1803-ca-faaoutage.html

The article goes on to say that flights on the ground will not be allowd to take off, flights in the air are being allowed to land. And there is no estimation of time on how long this situation will last.

20. did you try calling information?
to see if they could give you a phone number? Maybe you could reach the Travelers Aid desk. Or phone the airline's toll free number and tell them what you need to do.

21. Suppose this will force some needed $$ into FAA for needed
new systems? I guess it depends on how many important people were affected!

Thanks to everyone, especially Karl and Jonathan, for your help. I'm amazed how I reacted when I got home and heard my elderly dad on the message machine. I panic more now. Thanks again.
