Man Lands At JFK With Explosives
NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 2004

AP) A government contractor brought highly explosive Soviet munitions on his trip home from Afghanistan that were not detected until he arrived at John F. Kennedy airport, federal officials said.

Shaun Marshall, a medic for defense contractor DynCorp, arrived at Kennedy Aug. 19 from the United Arab Emirates. He was trying to board a United Airlines flight home to California when he was pulled aside for a routine security check.

A search of his bags by federal screeners found what police bomb technicians described in an FBI complaint as a Soviet "projectile point detonating fuse" and a "surface-to-air and air-to-air cartridge."

Federal officials said they could not comment Tuesday on the risk that the munitions posed to the flight. But the city police bomb squad determined the munitions were "highly explosive," according to the FBI complaint.

18. The article doesn't say which carrier he took from U.A.E.
I have no idea what the U.A.E. security procedures are but whatever they re, the responsibility for security for any flight departing from there rests with them, not us (U.S.). TSA did find the stuff after he arrived in the U.S. and before he boarded the flight originating in the U.S. (Kennedy).

Like it or not, it appears as though TSA did it's job properly.

7. he was released
A Port Authority spokesman said he could not comment on why Marshall was released.

I can tell you, it's because his name was Shaun Marshall and not Mohammend al-Something.

8. If it had been anyone else they would have been sent to GITMO!!!
Snipped from the original linked article ..

<snip>
Marshall, 26, told officers he was importing the munitions, which he believed to be inert, for use in DynCorp training exercises, and Port Authority police released him, federal officials said.

The FBI sent agents sent to arrest Marshall at his Riverside, California, home after the bomb squad analyzed the munitions and DynCorp officials said Marshall had no involvement in its training operations.

A Port Authority spokesman said he could not comment on why Marshall was released.

Marshall was released on bail in California and was expected to fly to New York City to be arraigned in federal court Friday.

11. I work for a different defense contractor....
...and when we travel, we carry a letter explaining what we do incase the sniffers come up positive.

I work with explosives every day, so it's not unusual to have residue on clothes, shoes, etc.

Now munitions.... that's a completely different story.

14. Dumbass...
He was sneaking it back to the states so the Dyncorp engineers could reverse engineer it...

Why not go through the proper channels?

Why?

Because that whole CF in Iraq is out of control.

19. That makes as much sense as arresting Barry Bingham when the
Courier-Journal (louisville, Ky, now owned by Gannett) employee went to his car, got his guns and started blasting away in downtown Louisville.

If he was acting at the direction of his superiors, it's another issue altogether. Then they should be held accountable.
