Top Republican predicts Maine win for Bush in '04
The chairman of the Republican National Committee said Tuesday he is confident President Bush will do something no Republican presidential candidate has done since 1988: Win Maine.

In an interview with the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, Ed Gillespie predicted that the 2004 campaign will be close - whomever the Democratic Party nominates will be tough, he said - but that the president's "strong and principled" leadership will win not only Maine, but states such as New York and California, which traditionally vote for Democratic presidential candidates.
/snip/

He said Bush inherited a weak economy from his Democratic predecessor and has put together a jobs and growth package that is beginning to produce results.

That's just what I needed with my French Roast, ...a good laugh. These idiots, if they were down minus 40 in the polls on election day, would still be saying, .."We're going to take Maine". Politics. Nothing more, nothing less...

Does Maine have electronic voting machines, by any chance?

edited to add: could I have the "weak" Clinton economy back, please? My family finances were solvent and growing, and I had a job in those "weak economy" days.

3. It's just that they have unlimited campaign funds.
Edited on Wed Aug-27-03 07:48 AM by Divernan
They're probably buying up all available TV/radio spots for 24/7
campaign ads. And look what they're saving by outsourcing their phone work/fund raising/get out the vote to India!

ON EDIT: Bush did two fundraisers yesterday/we lost two more American soldiers in battle - Bush came out millions richer - a truly great day for the GOP!

25. yes, electronic voting machines
that's the FIRST thing i thought of after reading this. whenever they are OVERCONFIDENT and smug about winning a state, something is wrong. that's like that guy in montana (?) who bragged about this happening to him in a county that had NEVER voted repuke before. and he won.

28. Remember in Nov. 2000
How TOTALLY, UNQUESTIONINGLY CONFIDENT Whistle Ass was that night? He KNEW he'd "won" Florida. He KNEW it. And something had gone "wrong" when the state was called for Gore. The "plan" had experienced a little hitch, but he KNEW that he had "won" it.

Florida in Nov. 2000 was an experiment for bigger 'n bolder things to come, a dress rehearsal. There were lots of hitches that night that needed to be ironed out. We saw more of it in Nov. 2002, and now Nov. 2004 we will see the Mother of All Election Stealing. Whistle Ass will win 50 states and people will oooh and ahhhh because "it's never happened before, but gee, he's just THAT popular!!" There will be no exit polls to prove otherwise.

4. uh... I don't think so...
this is typical repuke rhetoric. If you reverse the meaning of the sentence, what he was REALLY saying becomes clear...

Original:

"Bush inherited a weak economy from his Democratic predecessor and has put together a jobs and growth package that is beginning to produce results"

Translation:

Bush inherited a strong economy from his Democratic predecessor and has put together a jobs and growth package that will never produce results.

See how that works? It's just that simple. :-)

5. doesn't Maine do something funky
in that, you don't actually win the whole state, you win parts of it?

As in, you win Congressional District (A), but not (B) and so on and you can actaully end up winning a portion of the state's electoral votes?

8. Any of the Top Tier presidential challengers could win Maine
Maine's two districts are represented by Democrats, and both went for Gore last time. I have a feeling that all of New England will go for a Democrat in 2004, and that we will win Maine by a much larger margin this time around.

10. Using psychological manipulation
Let's see...the GOP is saying Maine, New York, and California are definitely voting for Bush because of his strong leadership. Well, I guess there is no need for me to go to the polls! Oh, well.

The problem with this silly strategy (because we all know that California and New York won't go for Bush) is that it has the potential to depress the GOP base. So, if someone who is on the fence but leaning Bush lives in New York, they may say, "Well, Bush is gonna win, so I'll go shopping instead of voting." Whereas the person on the fence but leaning Dem will be more likely to get to the polls to vote.

11. I don't think the French Canadian population is too keen on Bush
After that TV ad they ran against one of their own, Senator Olympia Snowe, criticizing her for not support the Bush tax cuts and pulling a stunt with the French Flag in the background to make her "look" bad.

Tough to win over a group of people who actually like the French since they are, well, um, FRENCH. I suppose we could just label them the Freedom Canadians of Maine.....NOT!!!

an inappropriate choice of mushrooms.

Bush pèré finished last here in '92, behind Clinton and Perot.

The Bushes are Summer People. They're Flatlanders. They're From Away.

There is no love between the Bushes and Maine because of their 'cottage'.

The war is not popular.

Deficits are an issue.

Snowe's popularity comes from pushing against, not with, Junta Boy.

And we use mostly paper hand counted or paper optically scanned ballots.

Any Democrat wins the state.

19. Yes
Gillespie's remarks are contradictory. He predicts the race will be close but says Bush will win Calif., N.Y. and Maine? If he wins those states the race ain't going to be anywhere near close.

18. LOL!!
GOP Gillespie said: the president's "strong and principled" leadership will win not only Maine, but states such as New York and California

He just destroyed all his credibility by throwing in NY and CA. Perhaps it was mildly plausible that Bush could win Maine (not very, but not a completely ludicrous concept). But by throwing in NY and CA, which Bush will no way win or even come close, Gillespie is demonstrated to be a lying hack.

Not that that is surprising, of course. After all, he is the chairman of the RNC.

35. Possible but doubtful
I did not realize this until a few months ago, when I was listening to NPR coverage of election 2000 for a paper I was doing, but Maine was pretty close last time...they called Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and DC for Gore at 8:03 PM (New York and Rhode Island's polls closed at 9) but Maine and New Hampshire were too close to call for almost an hour. So we cannot take Maine for granted, although I think the odds are definitely in favor of the Democrat, especially if it is Dean or Kerry (whom Larry Sabato also predicts might be able to win New Hampshire as well).

36. Well since we've lost all of our jobs....
maybe we'll lose our minds and vote for the junta.

It really depends on who the Dems run. Plenty of Christian rightwingers in the northern part of the state might split the vote. Also, NC now splits their vote.

Yes, we use pencil and paper and count by hand. Faster, cheaper, safer and oh so chic.
