Possibility of Civil War Looms Over Iraq

<snip>

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Sunni and Shiite clerics gunned down. Christian churches bombed. Hundreds of police killed, and Iraqi soldiers abducted and threatened with death.

<snip>
Is But these ties, which are in large part confined to the cities, are fraying as security becomes more precarious and violence spreads.

"The lessons of Bosnia indicate that communities that have lived in relative harmony can embrace sectarian divisions overnight," warns a report by London's Royal Institute of International Affairs.

One result, it says, could be Iraq's fragmentation into a Kurdish north, Sunni center and Shiite south.

Despite the violence and the collapse of his two principal justifications for the war, Bush unapologetically told the UN General Assembly in a speech that it must step up support for Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's fledgling government.

4. I thought the headline referred to Civil War in the United States.
And let's remember, the Neocon long game for Iraq envisions dividing the country along sectarian lines.

6. It is really time we just let it all go. It is a mess in that country.
I really think that that part of the world may like tribes running things. It is how they have always done things and it may be what they want. They are also always saying they hate our way of life so they may not really want a one man one vote govt.After all we got that through England.

I recall seeing the words "Iraq" and "civil war" used in the same sentence right here at DU. And it was during the time we were trying to talk the Bush regime OUT of invading!

But seriously, folks, we just don't have the moral authority to remain there any longer. I think it's best that we pull out and let them solve their own problems, even it it means that the country ends up divided into secular and non-secular parts. If they're stupid enough to continue the carnage by turning on each other instead, that's their misfortune.

9. War and chaos make a better cover for Bushista thievery
Bush likes war and chaos. Accountability goes out the window, it's hard to see the overruns and waste that lines someone's pocket through the smoke and explosions. A lot of money disappears, and nobody knows where it all went. Except that none of it seems to be left over, and they need more.

Oh yes, and the amount of taxes Dick Cheney has to pay on all that money that just showed up in his bank account is outrageously high! You don't mind if your kid is crammed into a classroom with 44 other kids do you? After all, Dick gots to get paid.

11. Kurdish north, Sunni center and Shiite south
Seems logical. Why can't this be a satisfactory outcome?

The US Iraqi Puppet Govt. would fall in less than two weeks after the US Colonization effort ends.

Actual Leaders of the Kurds, Sunnis, and Shi'ites?

12. aWol* just fucks up everything he touches....

<snip>
It is not uncommon for Iraqis to ascribe anything that goes wrong on the United States. In fact, many say that the United States, in trying to redress Saddam era injustices, has inflamed sectarian sentiments by showing bias in favor of the Shiite and Kurds, the two communities that suffered the most under the dictator's 23-year rule.

15. May I ask a stupid question? Please don't laugh ...
But isn't Iraq ALREADY in a civil war? Aren't various factions killing one another, and aren't a number of Iraq cities in the hands of people who don't recognize the current Iraqi leadership? In fact haven't some Iraqi leaders been assassinated by rebel forces?

I would imagine groups seldom declare "civil war" on one another. At what point does this thing become a civil war and not merely a possible civil war? November 3rd??

:shrug:
