Kitty (Kelley) bares her claws (at * biographer Ron Kessler)
http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/233748p-200740c.html

All the criticism of her new book finally seems to be getting to best-selling Bush-basher Kitty Kelley.
After a Friday taping of CNBC's "Capital Report" to promote "The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty," Kelley exploded at rival George W. Bush biographer Ronald Kessler, who had gone on the show to debunk Kelley's lurid allegations of drug use at Camp David.

"Kitty was watching in the makeup room," host Alan Murray told me, "and afterward she marched down to the door of the studio and raised her voice to Ron: 'Don't tell lies about my book. You haven't even read it!' She so was angry she was shaking."

Kessler - a former Washington Post reporter whose own book, "A Matter of Character: Inside the White House of George W. Bush" is favorable to the President - told me Kelley threatened to sue him after he argued on the air that there were serious problems with Kelley's credibility and reporting methods.

"She was livid and her eyes were blazing as she said, 'You may not say anything slanderous about my book in the future! Do you understand me? I'm putting you on notice!'"

5. Kessler was on NPR about 2 weeks ago..
..being 'interviewed' by Steve Inskeep, the dullard who took over Morning Edition when the NPR suits fired Bob Edwards. NPR is off my presets (and off my contributions list), but I still hear it from time to time.

Anyway, the interview was basically an infomercial with Kessler hyping his new book on Bush (whom he never talked to in the course of writing it), and his thesis was that Bush was a really nice guy and worth voting for, because people in the White House said so. Gee...isn't that something! People who work for the President think he's doing a good job!

Kessler's a weenie. I hope Kitty sues his ass off.

11. I've got a galley of the Kessler book. He bashes Gore.
Surprise, surprise. Anyway, a glimpse at "A Matter of Character" or whatever the drivel is called was truly sick-making. He's welcome to worship the Chimp and be dragged down with him. Fawning, servile -- oh, don't get me started.

22. Prior Book
I have another book of his called "Inside the White House" which deals with life in the White House. I remember he pretty much bought into all the Clinton scandals -- the book came out around 1994 -- and said that the mainstream press was not doing its job because it was relying on White House PR rather than good old-fashioned investigative journalism to report on the presidency. Incidentally, he claimed this was a problem in ALL administrations. Interestingly enough the only president he gave high marks to in regards to having the positive image actually match the real one was George H.W. Bush.

6. Isn't it almost impossible to sue for slander?
I think as a "public figure" it is almost impossible for Kitty Kelly to sue this clown for slander, and he damn well knows it. For slander to be proven, she has to prove her facts in a court of law and show that he did irreparble (sp?) harm to her or the book. Its one of the little tidbits as to why public figures so rarely sue tabloids and "news" sources like Drudge for slander or liable. You must prove your side first, and it would give him the change to defend himself by dragging out all of her sources to prove she's correct.

Sadly, she can't really sue him without revealing her sources. But, she can damn well tell him where to shove it!

12. Reckless disregard for truth or falsity
is grounds for punitive damages in libel or slander. There are tests to determine if this has happened. We are looking for actual malice. This does not matter if you are a public figure or not. This was a Supreme Court decision in New York Times vs Sullivan 1964.

There is no prior restraint regarding media. ( Near vs Minnesota ) This is why having accurate sources and a good legal team is so necessary.

This is from my Media Law and Ethics classes.

I honestly don't know if she really has grounds to sue or not. I am willing the bet the
Bush Admin cheerleader does not either. This was a shot accross his bow for sure.

God bless her.

14. Someday I will write a book on massages I have had . . .

http://www.dynaforce.com.sg/news_clippings.asp

Then along came Fitzgerald, who started out as his secretary and became so much more. Short, blonde and pretty, Jennifer Ann Isobel Patteson-Knight Fitzgerald was 42 years old and divorced when Bush first met her in Washington during the tumultuous months of the Watergate scandal. He was chairman of the Republican National Committee; she worked for one of the committee’s officials.
Professionally, Bush’s move from Washington to Beijing would enhance his credentials as he clawed his way to the presidency; but personally it would discombobulate his 30-year-old marriage, prompt his wife to burn her love letters and eventually lead to her severe depression.

“It wasn’t just another woman,” said someone close to the situation, discussing the wedge that came between Bush and Barbara. “It was a woman who came to exert enormous influence over George for many, many years . . . She became in essence his other wife . . . his office wife.” Fitzgerald landed in Beijing on December 5, 1974, and the next day she and Bush left for a 12-day diplomatic conference in Honolulu. In his diary, he wrote: “Spent the last two days out of that Sheraton Waikiki madhouse and in the 4999 Kahala apartment — just lovely . . . Checked out the bathhouse again . . . Totally relaxing. Someday I will write a book on massages I have had . . .

“I must confess the Tokyo treatment is the best. Walking the back . . . combination of knees and oil . . . does wonders for the sacroiliac, and a little something for the morale too . . . Flew back to Peking on Iran Airlines. Jennifer and I alone in first class.”

.......

“Suddenly there was a great commotion as the security men accompanying the secretary of state (Alexander Haig) and the attorney-general (William French Smith) converged on our table,” recalled one of the five dinner guests. “They started jabbering into their walkie-talkies, and then whispered to Haig and Smith, who both jumped up and left the restaurant.

“The two men returned about 45 minutes later, laughing their heads off. They said they had had to bail out George Bush, who’d been in a traffic accident with his girlfriend. Bush had not wanted the incident to appear on the (Washington) DC police blotter, so he had his security men contact Haig and Smith. They took care of things for him, then came back to dinner.”

8. Oh, he came on our morning show on KUOW a few weeks ago
and with one exception, the callers were furious at him and kept yelling at him (I sent the station an email while he was on begging them to make him stop.) I think the host was taken aback at the tone of the callers (he is a generally clueless guy anyway) and Kessler was lapping it all up.

18. good for her. i'm reading her book right now and it is good stuff.
Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 01:54 PM by progressivebebe
i'm not too far into it yet but i can already see why this will make the bush's heads explode. she tells the truth and there is nothing the bush crime family hate more than aired dirty laundry. tough. truth hurts. they are self absorbed, elitist snobs who truly believe that they are the better species and are EXPECTED to rule the have-nots/base. trickle down is their mantra.

what's nice about KK's book is that we get a glimpse into this elitist world where social climbing seems to be revered. these people have traded in souls for money and class/status. the funny thing is, they think everyone wants to be like them.

i may be in the minority here, but there are no yachts big enough, no mansion grand enough for me to trade in my life with the physical luxuries that they have. i would choose, any day, to live my semi-frugal life filled with intangible riches that are obviously beyond their comprehension.

30. his whole life, his daddy's, his grandaddy's, even his great grandaddy's
life. they were all born with a silver spoons in their mouths. the only one that was in his right mind was his great great grandaddy D.D. Walker who came from a poor farm family.

Apparently poppy's grandfather, Bert, was a real slime ball who tried to get his father (DD Walker) committed because Bert felt that his father was giving away too much money to charity. Bert felt that his inheritance was being squandered away. But before the outcome could be determined in court, the old man passed away.

and through the generations to follow, they all inherited the money, the meanness, and the immense alcoholism. it's really sad and tragic.

32. You said it!
One silver lining to living under the Bush regime has been the realization that I really like my life. I wouldn't live the way they do for anything. Those with happy lives and loving friends and family have something that the Bushes and their circle will never understand.

20. Kessler's saying Carter kids smoked dope in White House
Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 02:24 PM by downstairsparts
What Carter kids? I have never heard this story before. Has anybody else? The only Carter kid I remember living at the White House in late 70s was Amy. I'd see her in the playground of the school (public) that she went to. It was an elementary school. Was Amy smoking dope at that early age in the Carter White House, where alcohol was not even served?

Anybody up on this story?

23. Carter Kids
Except for the oldest boy, all the Carter kids -- even the married ones -- lived at the White House. I know one son had marital difficulties during that time but I don't recall anything about drug use in either straight news or gossip sources.

I really had completely forgotten there were other Carter kids at White House, but can never remember that particular gossip bruited about. Drug rumors abounded about the Ford kids, however, Susan and particularly Steve, if I remember correctly. Nobody knew about the Mother at the time.

Accusing Carter White House of smoking dope in attempt to smear and slander an author is a serious matter. False charges slanderers make have to be disputed and discredited. If they want to take it back to Carter, I'm perfectly ready to take it back to Ford.

Burning Bushes
A reader's guide to Kitty Kelley's The Family.

By Bryan Curtis

Page 253: At Andover, George W. Bush writes a morose essay about his sister's death. Searching for a synonym for "tears," he consults a thesaurus and writes, "And the lacerates ran down my cheeks." A teacher labels the paper "disgraceful."

Page 251: The family patriarch, Prescott Bush, questions W.'s seriousness about attending Yale, the Bush clan alma mater. "It's the difference between ham and eggs," he says. "The chicken is involved. The pig is committed."

Page 261-68: George W. at Yale. A witness remembers a "roaring drunk" Bush doing the Alligator at a fraternity kegger. A frat brother says Bush "wasn't an ass man." Another friend concurs: "Poor Georgie. He couldn't even relate to women unless he was loaded. … There were just too many stories of him turning up dead drunk on dates." W. lovingly tends to his frat brothers but derides other Yalies as "liberal pussies."

Page 271: Joke excised from Bush's 2001 Yale commencement speech: "It's great to return to New Haven. My car was followed all the way from the airport by a long line of police cars with slowly rotating lights. It was just like being an undergraduate again."
