AP via Yahoo! News: Edwards Calls Cheney Remark Dishonorable

If it has not been posted yet...

By VICKI SMITH, Associated Press Writer

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. - Democrat John Edwards (news - web sites) urged President Bush (news - web sites) on Wednesday to renounce Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites)'s statement that the United States risks another terrorist attack if voters make the wrong election choice, calling the warning dishonorable and un-American.

"This statement by the vice president of the United States was intended to divide us," Edwards said. "It was calculated to divide us on an issue of safety and security for the American people. It's wrong and it's un-American."

Edwards made his comments to supporters while campaigning in West Virginia, a day after Cheney said at a town hall meeting in Iowa, "It's absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on Nov. 2, we make the right choice, because if we make the wrong choice then the danger is that we'll get hit again and we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States."

Bush declined to comment on Cheney's statement when asked about it Wednesday at the White House. Spokesman Scott McClellan said, "There are differences in how the two candidates approach the war on terror. That's what the vice president was talking about in his remarks."

P.S.: I believe every thread in "Latest Breaking News" needs the journalist source and the outlet in the topic headline.

1. Couldn't agree with you more on your PS...
..Also, some stuff I've seen in Latest Breaking News lately are just stupid (not this article of course).

Glad to hear Edwards use forceful language

5. Thanks then, and 'un-American' is not a light word to use on a sitting VP.
You can be sure that TV and radio types will pick up on that. I think he's right on - the type of irrational fear that Cheney is trying to spread, the paranoia about the other guy, is as out of line as it was during the era of Joe McCarthy.

3. Madeline Albreight (sp?)
Madeline Albreight came out and said something similar. I'm glad Veep Crashcart is getting beaten about the head for his statements.

Cheers!

4. Almost everything Cheneying Cheney says or does goes against the grain
of the most sacred and honorable principles upon which this Republic was founded and has flourished.

9. Damn right, I demand a retract of Cheney's irresponsible words!
I'm calling the WH today! This is downright Un-American to base our politics on fear when this country was founded on courage! I can't think of a more deplorable statement in my lifetime!

11. Clever wording - If Bush doesn't renounce Bush is "dishonorable"...
So Edwards lays a trap for Bush - Bush=dishonorable implicitly leads back to the question: How could Bush have been honorably discharged?

12. Heard on a Neocon AM radio station today
A Republican woman called in to a neocon show and said she was very frightened and angry about what she heard Bush campaigners at a Bush HQ saying while on the phone to voters just yesterday. She said the camppaigners were stating that a vote for Kerry will bring a terroist attack. She found this so horrifying and contemptible, that she will now vote for Kerry. She didn't speak up at the HQ, instead she walked out and spent the rest of the day very angry about it all and then finally decided to call this in to the show. The AM show is a local one here in Tucson.
