Blair deceived us on threat, Britons tell pollster
Edited on Sun Aug-24-03 11:52 AM by NNN0LHI
How nice it would be if Americans were smart enough to figure out the same thing is true of Bush. Don

More than two-thirds of British voters believe they have been deceived by Tony Blair's Government over the threat posed by Saddam Hussein's weapons program, a poll has found.

The ICM poll, for The Sunday Telegraph, shows the Hutton inquiry into the death of British weapons expert David Kelly has severely hit public trust in the Blair Government.

It comes as Mr Blair and Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon prepare to give evidence to the inquiry this week and coincides with the release of documents that show the Prime Minister was intimately involved in the process of outing Dr Kelly.

Dr Kelly apparently committed suicide on July 17 after being named as the source of a BBC story that claimed No. 10 had "sexed up" the case against Saddam Hussein in the Government's Iraq dossier last September.

1. Which is worse - dishonesty or incompetence?
Although I would just LOVE it if American's woke up to Bushco's* dishonesty and media manipulation that led to the invasion of Iraq, I think, for the US, the incompetence in the way they are handling Iraq is what will get them in the end (no pun intended).

I think the lack of WMD is eroding some people's view of Bush*, but not enough to make much difference. Most people view that as "old hat". But the continuing quagmire in Iraq and the inability to gain control and bring US troops home will do much more damage.

For this same reason, if WMD are found now, I don't think it will give Bush* the bump he's hoping for. Again, finding WMD will only be some justification for the invasion, but their incompetence in handling the results of the invasion are what most American's are seeing now.

In Britain, the major point is still the lies leading to war, although if many more British troops are killed that might change. In America, the major point is increasingly the incompetence in running Iraq, and the continuing danger to and death of American troops.

4. The difference is the press
The American press defends Bush, the BBC tries to challenge Blair.

10. Closer investigation of Kelly suicide
I suspect there was foul play, perhaps from abroad, to silence Kelly
